The reputation of the ch\u00e2teau - owned by the\u00a0Cruse<\/em>\u00a0until 1975 - was done in the worst possible way for a classified growth: it was served in non-vintage half-bottles on the tables of the Compagnie internationale des wagons-lits dining cars. It has to be said that\u00a0Guy Tesseron<\/em>It's clear that he and his son had the courage, even the self-sacrifice, to take over a run-down business. Ambition was the key. Major investments have been made in this exceptional wine. Harvesting methods have evolved, with the grapes now harvested in two passes and transported in crates.<\/p>\n

          Ch\u00e2teau Lynch-Bages is a 94-hectare wine estate in Pauillac, Gironde. It is classified as a fifth growth in the official 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines. Owned by the\u00a0Jean-Michel Cazes company,<\/em>\u00a0production is 420,000 bottles. This is the very type of wine that would justify a revision of the 1855 classification, where it is situated in the last third of the fifth rank. Since 1934, the combined talents of the\u00a0Cazes family<\/em>and relayed by those of\u00a0Daniel Llose<\/em>the estate's managing director, have propelled the wine to second place. And the story is not new.\u00a0Bernard Ginestet<\/em>\u00a0vividly recounts how, on three separate occasions, eminent palates in the Gironde region have blindly confused Lynch-Bages. But that's where the resemblance ends. In fact, Lynch Bages was eclipsed for around ten years between 1971 and 1982, with the exception of the bewildering 1975. After a short period of concessions to consumers in a hurry, Lynch-Bages has regained the power of the Pauillacs, all the more easily since a third of the harvest is marketed under the label of the second wine, Haut-Bages Averous.<\/p>\n

The Pichon-Longueville Baron estate covers 70 hectares of vines and produces around 400,000 bottles a year. The terroir and grape varieties promised better than the wine produced by the estate until 1987. The arrival of capital from the insurance company Axa et Comp\u00e9tence and the competence of\u00a0Jean-Michel Cazes<\/em>\u00a0have raised the quality of a wine that had been on a downward spiral. Everyone agrees that Pichon-Longueville Baron's land is superior in quality to that of\u00a0Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande<\/a>. Perhaps the winemaking methods used did not enhance the wine's character.<\/p>\n

A faultless record for this vintage over the last twenty years. The authority of\u00a0Mme de Lencquesaing<\/em>\u00a0and the talent of\u00a0Jean-Jacques Godin<\/em>Pichon-Lalande, who was the estate's steward until the 1992 harvest, can be felt in a wine that arouses the affection of wine-lovers. Apart from this emotional - and therefore irrational - aspect, the phenomenon can be explained by geography: part of Pichon-Lalande's territory extends into the commune of Saint-Julien. In addition, the proportion of Merlot (50%) lends the wine an unusual roundness for a Pauillac. Similarly, the limited ageing of 50% of new barrels preserves the fruit character. It's worth noting that the gap is narrowing in the competition launched in 1987 between the wine from\u00a0May-\u00c9liane de Lencquesaing<\/em>\u00a0and its challenger,\u00a0Pichon-Baron<\/em>.<\/p>\n

                The history of the family estate dates back to the 16th century. Where does the name come from?\u00a0Grand-Puy<\/em> comes from the old expression puy<\/em> \"which means low mound<\/em>\". The Grand-Puy Lacoste vineyard is located on one of the ridges where the M\u00e9doc's premier crus were born. Since then, the estate has been managed from generation to generation by the same family until 1920. It is currently the\u00a0Borie family<\/em> who has managed the estate since 1978. The vineyard covers 55 hectares in Bages, southwest of Pauillac. The different grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon at 75%, Merlot at 20% and Cabernet Franc at 5%. The vines are on average 40 years old, and are cultivated according to tradition, with ploughing and the minimum possible use of phytosanitary products.<\/p>\n

                  The name of the Batailley estate comes from \"\u00a0Battle<\/em>\" . This 1453 battle over the vines and the Ch\u00e2teau, the Hundred Years' War. During this war, France reconquered the famous Ch\u00e2teau Latour, then occupied by the English. This marked the end of British possession in Aquitaine. Today, with the fine effort that results from the association with oenologist Denis Dubourdieu, Mr. Philippe Cast\u00e9ja gives birth to a superb Pauillac, elegant, with a lot of style in a classic form. The association of these two enthusiasts has enabled Ch\u00e2teau Batailley to gain in definition and precision in recent vintages. It's a great wine for laying down, aging extremely well, typical of Pauillac grands crus. We can also say that it is more accessible in terms of price, compared to other great wines of the appellation.<\/p>\n
