Characteristics of Pommard wines<\/h2>\n

The village is crossed by a small stream, the Avant-Dheune, a remnant of a river that flowed down from the mountains to the Jurassic Sea in antediluvian times. They are known for their strength. These wines are more about substance than elegance. Their alter ego, in C\u00f4te de Nuits, would be Gevrey Chambertin<\/a>. Pommard<\/a> benefited for a long time from a fashion effect at the expense of Volnay<\/a>to more delicate wines. We'd love to find more of them that are as successful and accomplished as the wines we taste.<\/p>\n

Understanding the Premiers Crus of Pommard<\/h2>\n

The Pommard appellation has 28 premiers crus<\/strong> which are divided into three groups: one on the Volnay side, another on the Beaune side, and the last on the south-facing slope of the combe leading to Nantoux.<\/p>\n

Within the 1st group (Volnay), the best terroirs classically occupy the middle of the slope, as is often the case in Burgundy. Their leader is unquestionably \"\u00a0The Rugians<\/strong>\" at least in their lower section.<\/p>\n

On the Beaune side, the most interesting terroirs are located further down the slope, where they benefit from the river's alluvial cone, which has brought down the decomposed rock from the hillside. \"Les Grands\" and \"Les Petits \u00c9penots\" illustrate this type of soil, the perfect example being \"\u00a0Clos des \u00c9peneaux<\/strong>\" .<\/p>\n

Could it be that Grands Pommard need a decade or more to mature before revealing themselves in all their majesty? The best bottles would then show themselves in an ungrateful light in their youth, while those that are pleasant to taste early on would lack the typicity that marks the best. great Pommard<\/strong>This can be explained by geology. While Volnay's vineyards are mostly located at the top of the slope, on active limestone soil containing little clay, Pommard's are lower down the slope, and their soils are heterogeneous, part of the slope having subsided and mixed with the rest under the action of the river. The soils therefore contain much more clay, and more iron, and are the source of the wines' dark color and robust tannins.<\/p>\n
