Panic in Burgundy<\/a>The Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO) is considering a project to redefine the term \"Appellation d'Origine\". Burgundy vineyards<\/strong> which would exclude no less than 64 communes from the Bourgogne AOC, the majority of which are Chablis<\/a>. 64 Burgundy communes under threat<\/h2>\n

The INAO's plan calls for the removal of 64 villages from the Bourgogne AOC, 30 of which are in C\u00f4te-d'Or, 12 in Sa\u00f4ne-et-Loire (M\u00e2connais), 22 in Yonne - 16 of which are in the Chablis<\/a>. Only the Chablais commune of Pr\u00e9hy is not concerned.<\/p>\n

Potential major economic loss for Chablis winegrowers<\/h2>\n

If this project comes to fruition, which doesn't look like happening any time soon given the protests and the fact that it has been on \"pause\" for 63 years, the producers who would lose the right to produce under the appellation Burgundy<\/a>The price of their land, and therefore their production, could potentially be devalued by a factor of 3. The price of land depends on whether or not it belongs to the Burgundy AOC.<\/p>\n

Conversely, the project also envisages that half of Beaujolais winegrowers would become AOC Burgundy. Beaujolais in Burgundy? This is hard to explain to the winegrowers of Chablis and Burgundy, who are up in arms about this project. To be continued...<\/p>\n
