{"id":6117,"date":"2021-02-22T09:13:37","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T08:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/?p=6117"},"modified":"2021-02-26T12:01:40","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T11:01:40","slug":"pierre-gaillard-wine-guide-rhone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/en\/pierre-gaillard-wine-guide-rhone\/","title":{"rendered":"Domaine Pierre Gaillard: Guide and presentation of the estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"p32\">Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our partner estates:<\/span><span id=\"p33\">\u00a0<strong>Pierre Gaillard estate<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/direct-producteur\/\"><strong>&gt; Partner domains : See all guides<\/strong>\u00a0?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span id=\"p2\">This estate is located in\u00a0<span id=\"12\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Malleva<\/span> and a new producer in the C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie appellation.<\/span><span id=\"p36\">\u00a0It was founded in 1986 with just 0.25 hectares of vines.<\/span><span id=\"p37\">\u00a0Before setting up his own estate, Pierre Gaillard was experienced in everything to do with\u00a0<span id=\"38\" class=\"s-rg-t\">C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p5\">\u00a0He\u00a0<span id=\"24\" class=\"s-or-t\">a<\/span> planted these first vines, which were used in Guigal's famous \"La Turque\" cuv\u00e9e wines. Their cuv\u00e9es are produced in the following appellations <\/span><span id=\"p39\">St Joseph and\u00a0<span id=\"40\" class=\"s-rg-t\">C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">History of the domain :<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span id=\"p97\">Domaine Pierre Gaillard was created in 1980.<\/span><span id=\"p102\"> Pierre Gaillard always wanted to be a farmer, even though he didn't come from a farming background.<\/span><span id=\"p51\">\u00a0He met some passionate people during his studies in Beaune who really gave him a taste for wine and the vine.<\/span><span id=\"p52\">\u00a0He bought his first plot of St Joseph's\u00a0<span id=\"p105\">(the Clos de\u00a0<span id=\"106\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Cuminaille<\/span>)<\/span> in 1981, he completely cleared and planted it <span id=\"p47\">(by hand!)<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p53\">\u00a0At the time, he was working double-time for Domaine Vidal Fleury.\u00a0<span id=\"p46\">(then\u00a0<span id=\"73\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Guigal<\/span>\u00a0when the house was bought)<\/span>\u00a0as crop manager.<\/span><span id=\"p101\">\u00a0He continued to buy small plots, which he cleared and replanted. At the time, there were hardly any vines left in the Northern Rh\u00f4ne, and he participated with other winemakers in the rebirth and redefinition of these abandoned appellations.<\/span><span id=\"p55\">\u00a0In 1986, he set up his own business and continued to expand his estate.<\/span><span id=\"p56\">\u00a0<span id=\"78\" class=\"s-or-t\">A<\/span>\u00a0At that time, he worked on the\u00a0<span id=\"79\" class=\"s-rg-t\">PDO<\/span>\u00a0Condrieu, St Joseph and C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie.<\/span><span id=\"p57\">\u00a0Today, it has spread throughout the Rh\u00f4ne valley.\u00a0<span id=\"p45\">(<span id=\"71\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Crozes<\/span>St\u00a0<span id=\"72\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Peray<\/span>Cornas to boot)<\/span>\u00a0and even beyond, as he created a domain in\u00a0<span id=\"81\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Banyuls<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span id=\"82\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Collioure<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"p107\">(domain\u00a0<span id=\"108\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Madeloc<\/span>)<\/span> and F<span id=\"83\" class=\"s-rg-t\">aug\u00e8res<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"p109\">(domain\u00a0<span id=\"110\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Cottebrune<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p104\"> Pierre Gaillard has always enjoyed rebuilding his vineyards, redoing the dry stone terraces on his hillsides.<\/span><span id=\"p103\">\u00a0He also enjoys shaping the landscape.<\/span><span id=\"p60\">\u00a0He has a great admiration for schist terroirs\u00a0<span id=\"p42\">(found in C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie,\u00a0<span id=\"67\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Faug\u00e8res<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span id=\"68\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Collioure<\/span>)<\/span>which add elegance and delicacy to the wines;<\/span><span id=\"p61\">\u00a0and if they're on a slope, even better!<\/span><span id=\"p62\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span id=\"p62\">Syrah is the grape variety of choice, the only red variety in the northern Rh\u00f4ne Valley.<\/span><span id=\"p63\">\u00a0Its aromatic palette is very broad, and the tannins are supple and silky.<\/span><span id=\"p64\">\u00a0But he wanted to get to grips with a totally different grape variety, Grenache, by going down to Languedoc and Roussillon.<\/span><span id=\"p65\">\u00a0If at\u00a0<span id=\"90\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Collioure<\/span>\u00a0Grenache is the king of grape varieties, Pierre has planted Syrah grapes as he likes them, at\u00a0<span id=\"91\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Faug\u00e8res<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p66\">\u00a0The appellation is truly the link between north and south, where Grenache and Syrah coexist in harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The estate today :\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span id=\"p147\">Pierre Gaillard's wife, although a schoolteacher, has always accompanied her husband in the development of his estate, and in his taste for wine.<\/span><span id=\"p157\"> Over the years, they have passed on their passion for wine, gastronomy, travel and beautiful landscapes to their children.<\/span><span id=\"p114\"> Thanks to <span id=\"127\" class=\"s-rg-t\">their parents<\/span>\u00a0the values of work and the pleasure of creation.<\/span><span id=\"p156\">\u00a0Each child had a different journey, but at some point they all chose to return to the estates and make the terroirs their own.<\/span><span id=\"p158\"> Each in their own way, according to their own skills and desires, decided to join their parents, and together they created the Pierre Gaillard Family.<\/span><span id=\"p159\">\u00a0Jeanne, the eldest, was the first in 2008, setting up her own estate and creating her own wines.<\/span><span id=\"p118\">\u00a0Then it was the turn of<span id=\"139\">Elise<\/span>\u00a0to help his parents in the south, in\u00a0<span id=\"140\">Collioure<\/span><span id=\"141\">,<\/span> where she\u00a0<span id=\"142\">y to<\/span> quickly found its feet, and <span id=\"143\">a <\/span>ends up staying.<\/span><span id=\"p160\">\u00a0Pierre-Antoine, the youngest of the family, then joined them, sailing between the different estates, bringing his taste and skills to the improvement of slope viticulture, common to all three regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The best wines from Domaine Pierre Gaillard:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<u><\/u>St Joseph red (terroir range) :\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pierre-gaillard-saint-joseph_1-e1613981345346.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pierre-gaillard-saint-joseph_1-e1613981345346.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><span id=\"p176\">This is the main cuv\u00e9e, which brings together most of the vines found on different terroirs in St Joseph, but all located to the north of the appellation.<\/span><span id=\"p164\">\u00a0These plots tend to be\u00a0<span id=\"168\" class=\"s-rg-t\">mechanizable<\/span>on plateaus or fairly gentle hillsides, always well exposed.<\/span><span id=\"p177\">\u00a0And Pierre likes advanced ripeness, so he picks his grapes without any vegetal notes, always on the fruit, at the risk of losing part of the harvest if weather conditions were to deteriorate.<\/span><span id=\"p166\">\u00a0The result is a wine very typical of its appellation, with crisp fruit and silky tannins.\u00a0<span id=\"p162\">(Pierre Gaillard's trademark!)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>St Joseph Clos de\u00a0<span class=\"m_532676973649591508spelle\">Cuminaille :\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/clos-de-cuminaille.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/clos-de-cuminaille.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p180\">\u00a0This is the very first parcel Pierre bought in 1981.<\/span><span id=\"p193\"> It was a wasteland at the time, and he cleared it completely, planted it with Syrah and cultivated it.<\/span><span id=\"p182\">\u00a0The first vintage was released in 1983, a Cuv\u00e9e Jeanne, named after his first daughter.\u00a0<span id=\"p179\">(born the following year during bottling!)<\/span> then, little by little, this parcel was isolated, because of its remarkable consistency, and gave rise to the Clos de <span id=\"187\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Cuminaille<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p183\"> As Pierre himself says, he doesn't know exactly why this clos produces such exceptional wines. The orientation and soil are no different from many other parcels, the slope is gentle, not necessarily impressive, but there you have it: the grapes are always more concentrated, with more depth, the tannins always silky, with depth and minimality, and Pierre knows how to express them.\u00a0<span id=\"191\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Cuminaille<\/span> is always ready to drink as young as it is old.<\/span><span id=\"p184\">\u00a0Le Clos de\u00a0<span id=\"192\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Cuminaille<\/span> is located on a former farm dating back to Roman times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>St Joseph Les Pierres :<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pierre-gaillard-les-pierres.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p220\">This is the most impressive St Joseph cuv\u00e9e, the most representative of the northern expression of St Josephs.<\/span><span id=\"p221\">\u00a0It's particularly impressive because the hillside from which it springs is so impressive!<\/span><span id=\"p222\">\u00a0A superb south-facing hillside in C\u00f4te Bellay, just below our house.\u00a0<span id=\"p219\">(they've planted fig, almond and olive trees, and the prickly pear trees are growing there all by themselves!)<\/span>. It's hot here, with dry-stone granite walls holding back magnificent terraces, to prevent erosion on slopes averaging over 50 %.<\/span><span id=\"p223\">\u00a0At the very bottom, a small wood protects the stream and the small meadow on the flat.<\/span><span id=\"p225\">.<\/span><span id=\"p226\">\u00a0This exceptional terroir is reflected in this cuv\u00e9e.<\/span><span id=\"p227\"> It has the greatest ageing potential, the peppery expression of Northern Rh\u00f4ne Syrah, and the fullest, velvety tannins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">C\u00f4te- R\u00f4tie :\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Cote-rotie-gaillard.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p234\">A blend of the majority of our parcels on the hills of the C\u00f4te Brune and C\u00f4te Blonde, this C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie is what they want to represent the C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie terroir most clearly:<\/span><span id=\"p235\">\u00a0of the\u00a0<span id=\"242\" class=\"s-rg-t\">minerality<\/span>delicate, fine tannins.<\/span><span id=\"p236\">\u00a0Pierre has the ability to express this terroir both in its youth and over time.<\/span><span id=\"p237\">\u00a0It will age easily 10\u00a0<span id=\"243\" class=\"s-or-t\">\u00e0<\/span>\u00a015 years old.<\/span><span id=\"p238\">\u00a0The constant on all these plots is the slope!<\/span><span id=\"p249\">\u00a0Beautiful schist slopes with gradients between 30 % and 50 %, dry-stone walls to retain the soil and prevent erosion.<\/span><span id=\"p240\"> This exceptional terroir has always been Pierre's dream, and it's here that he finds the most elegant expression of Syrah.<\/span><span id=\"p241\">\u00a0The 10 % from\u00a0<span id=\"248\" class=\"s-rg-t\">viogniers<\/span>\u00a0that line the vineyards are perhaps not to blame either!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<u><\/u>C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie Esprit de Blonde :\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Capture-esprit-de-blonde.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Capture-esprit-de-blonde-690x255.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Capture-esprit-de-blonde-690x255.png 690w, https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Capture-esprit-de-blonde.png 716w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p252\">This cuv\u00e9e comes from a parcel just a stone's throw from \"C\u00f4te Blonde\" on the hill of the same name.<\/span><span id=\"p253\">\u00a0A magnificent narrow hillside of\u00a0<span id=\"257\">50 ha (ares)<\/span>\u00a0where there are almost as many walls as vines, the soil is composed of gneiss, a fairly soft rock.\u00a0<span id=\"259\">80ans<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"p251\">(there are almost no\u00a0<span id=\"255\">viognier<\/span>\u00a0in the plot, which is quite rare on old vines).<\/span>The slope is very steep, and the porters take turns harvesting!<\/span><span id=\"p261\">\u00a0This exceptional landscape is expressed in this cuv\u00e9e with great delicacy, suppleness and finesse, typical of the C\u00f4te Blonde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>C\u00f4te- R\u00f4tie Rose Pourpre :<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rose-pourpre.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comptoirdesmillesimes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rose-pourpre.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p263\">In contrast to the Esprit de Blonde cuv\u00e9e, there is the Rose Pourpre.<\/span><span id=\"p264\">\u00a0In 1983, Pierre bought a plot of land on the C\u00f4te Brune hillside, at a place called C\u00f4te Rosier.<\/span><span id=\"p265\">\u00a0<span id=\"272\" class=\"s-or-t\">\u00c0<\/span> At the time, when he spotted this wasteland and tried to buy it from its owner, C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie land wasn't worth much.<\/span><span id=\"p266\">\u00a0The owner offers to sell the plot for the price of repairing the roof of her house!<\/span><span id=\"p267\">\u00a0And here was a transaction that made two happy!<\/span><span id=\"p274\">\u00a0Like many of his plots, Pierre has completely cleared and planted this splendid steep brown schist hillside.<\/span><span id=\"p269\"> He planted only Syrah.<\/span><span id=\"p270\">\u00a0The resulting cuv\u00e9e is powerful, velvety and suave, with incredible length and magnificent ageing potential.<\/span><span id=\"p271\">\u00a0Here we find the
