Château la Gaffelière 2009
Saint-Emilion - First Grand Cru Rated B
95+/100 Parker
Cellaring potential: Drink now or cellar until 2052. A great wine for ageing.
Tasted by Parker in 2011: "An absolutely spectacular effort, the 2009 is one of the greatest La Gaffeliere's ever made. One would have to go back to 2005, 1947 or 1961 to find this level of quality from this historic old vineyard planted next to the walls of St. Emilion on the Côte Pavie. Dating back to the 1400s, this estate has been owned by the Malet-Roquefort family for over three centuries. Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (it used to be two-thirds Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc), the 2009 reveals compelling elegance, extraordinary intensity and opulence, and more viscosity than one usually sees. Numerous notes of kirsch, licorice, incense, truffles, asphalt, blackberries, and black currants dominate the aromas and flavors of this viscous, fabulously pure, flamboyant St.-Emilion. Drinking it now may be considered infanticide by some consumers, but it is already seductive, and should last for three to four decades."
