ORIGIN AND LOCATION OF THE VILLAGE
Vosne Romanée appears in a writing around 636-650 under the name of Vaona, then successively Vadoa, Vanona, Voone (in the 13th century). At this period, Clotaire lists the possessions of the Abbey of Bèze in this commune. Simon de Vergy, Canon of St Denis, gave the Abbey one of his vines (Le Cloître). In the 9th century, Vosne was part of the Prieuré Saint Vivant, founded around 890 by Manasses I. It belonged to the order of Cluny.
The Vosne country is republican, revolutionary, praised to the skies by the Prince de Conti, who makes sure to recover the good part of the inheritance.
By deliberation dated 7 May 1865, the Town Council requested the addition of the climat "Romanée" in the name of the commune. The village will eventually take the name of Vosne Romanée following the imperial decree on 11 April 1866. The appellation Vosne Romanée is located on either side of the village, west of the R.N. 74 road, without crossing it. The coast remains straight, but the A road makes a wide turn. The soil, very permeable, is composed of scree slopes which contain erosion. The foothills are composed of brown calcareous soils resting on silt or marl. Our vines are particularly well exposed and are located in the following areas: Les Genévrières, Les Réas, les Violettes, les Vigneux. These toponyms make it possible to discover the origin of the place which very often relates to the history or the location of the place.
ORIGIN OF THE PLOT
Les Violettes: The bouquet is sometimes defined in a very pretty way, so the wines produced there would have a penetrating bouquet of hawthorn and violet.
Les Genévrières : Some shrubs with thorny leaves and purple berries grew in the wind-battered terrain, the junipers we encounter here in Vosne Romanée. "Aux Genaivrières" spelled this way on the 1827 land register.
CHARACTER OF THE WINE
Wines from the Vosne Romanée appellation are all of excellent quality, as all the vineyards are located on sites and soils that are highly favourable to the production of good wines. Their distinctive quality is the elegance. Structured by discreet tannins and an unobtrusive acid content, they are wonderfully mellow. They have substance and linger long on the palate. Very aromatic, they highlight scents of cherries, strawberries and woodland undergrowth in an elegant combination of fruits and spices.
GASTRONOMY
Because of their finesse, their typical velvety texture and their delicate perfume, all these wines deserve a refined gastronomy, fine dishes allowing the exteriorization of this nectar. Marinades should be excluded, but cream sauce is not contraindicated: the wine must remain the master. When it comes to game, it is preferable to roast it and prepare a sauce cooked separately. Game birds are more suitable, as well as butcher's meat or poultry. Similarly, Burgundy cheeses are perfect with Vosne wines.
CELLARING
The Vosne Romanée wines can be appreciated from 5 years old, continuing to mature for a few years (up to 10 years for the great vintages). During ageing, what these wines lose in structure and body, they gain in finesse, elegance and bouquet.
