Meet the Vieux Télégraphe estate

A family story

He's first and foremost a man at the root of this field, sir. Henri Brunierwhich gave birth to the estate in 1981in the small village of Bédarrides (Vaucluse department), now known as the southeastern part of the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Henri then handed over the reins to his son Hyppolyte Brunier. He obtained plots of land in La Crau. At the time, however, it was inconceivable to grow grapes on such an ungrateful terrain. The density of rolled pebbles made the soil uncultivable.

Where does the name "Vieux-Télégraphe" come from?

Jules BrunierHippolyte's son, enlarged the estate to 17 hectares and named it " Old Telegraph" . Indeed, in 1821, Claude Chappe, inventor of the optical telegraph, installed one of his relay towers here.

Then came the war...

Needless to say, the impact on the region. Henri, second of the name, fourth generation of the Brunier familywho rebuilt the estate. This man's actions have been a real springboard for the estate, both in terms of growth of the terroir, and in terms of the market. 55 hectares of vines, development of Châteauneuf-du-Papeand then sold on the world's biggest markets. It was then that a true "Old Telegraph style" developed.

And today!

From the beginning of the 1980His two sons, Frédéric and Daniel, took up the torch. 98 ha of AOC vines. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 15 in IGP Vaucluse and AOC Ventoux. Even more, in 1998With the help of their friend Kermit Lynch, they set up a partnership to produce on the 135-hectare "Les Pallières" estate. 1998 saw the birth of Massaye, located in Lebanon. A partnership with Sami and Ramzi Ghosn, with 50 ha of vines (north-east of the Beqaa plain).

A great estate, full of experience and passion, which, from generation to generation, produces authentic and highly sought-after wines! A philosophy well respected.

The best vintages of Vieux Télégraphe Rouge

vieux telegraphe chateauneuf du pape rouge

  • Vieux Télégraphe 2010 97/100 Robert Parker - 96/100 Wine Spectator

One of the greatest Old Telegraphs of all time. It boasts a superb purple color, with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, cassis, nori (the seaweed that wraps sushi), black olives, hints of licorice and pepper. Full-bodied, fleshy, thick, this wine has a boatload of tannin, but it also possesses incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it put on weight and considerable intensity. Forget about it for 3-4 years, and drink it over the next 25-30.

Drink now until 2045!

  • Vieux Télégraphe 2007 – 96+/100 Robert Parker - 95/100 Wine Spectator

Perhaps one of the greatest wines produced by this winery. Tinged ruby/purple color, with an exquisite nose of salty sea breeze, licorice, ground pepper, black cherry jam, cassis, figs and plums. It's a full-bodied, rich wine, offering Provencal style with plenty of sweetness and ripe tannins. This wine normally closes up to several years after bottling, but should have a long life (25 years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, enormous length and richness.

Drink now through to 2035.

  • Old Telegraph 1990 – 95/100 Robert Parker

By far my favorite of the range was the 1990 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It's a knockout, with all its aromas continuing to change and evolve in the glass. Garrigue, seaweed, olives, ripe red and black fruits. Full-bodied, transparent and elegant, with fine tannins and a sunny, graceful personality. It's fully matured and I see no need to delay tasting.

Drink now.

  • Vieux Télégraphe 2005 – 95/100 Robert Parker - 95/100 Wine Spectator

One of the appellation's most worthy vintages, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape "Vieux-Télégraphe" was magnificent on this occasion, showing classic iodine, seaweed and pungent herbs interwoven with layers of sweet cassis, plums and blackberries. Full-bodied, powerful and ripe, with a still youthful profile, this beauty should develop for ten years or more.

Drink now, until 2030.

  • Vieux Télégraphe 1998 – 95/100 Robert Parker - 94/100 Wine Spectator

One of the most large Vieux Télégraphe that was produced. It took a good ten years for this wine to shed its tannins and emerge from its closed period. It has finally seen the light of day, and notes of iodine, seaweed, blackcurrant, incense and sweet cherries, as well as warm rocks, embellish this full-bodied, powerful wine. It possesses great elegance and purity, as well as loads of raspberry and incense, in a round, juicy, rich style. It will continue to evolve for 10-15 years.

Drink now, until 2030.

  • Vieux Télégraphe White 2015 – 95/100 Robert Parker - 95/100 Wine Spectator

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2015 is the finest example of this cuvée. A light gold color, followed by an impeccably balanced, ultra-pure, transparent white that holds complex notes of white flowers, hazelnuts, crushed rocks and citrus blossoms. This beauty offers you fruit and sweetness. It grows on you with time in the glass. You can drink it now, or cellar it for two decades.

Drink now through 2036.

  • Vieux Télégraphe White 2018 – 94/100 Robert Parker

Blend of 40% Clairette and 30% Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, from Crau vines averaging 50 years of age. Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc 2018 continues this wine's excellent track record. On the nose, it holds lemon zest. A little silky on the palate, but so fresh, lemony and vibrant. A finish that reveals a crisp, refreshing wine.

  • Vieux Télégraphe white 2005 – 93/100 Robert Parker - 93/100 Wine Spectator

One of the best white wines in Chateauneuf du Pape is this 2005 Vieux Télégraphe, which is aged 50% in foudres and 50% in vats. It holds an exorbitant amount of 40% Clairette. It reveals a magnificent texture similar to a white Burgundy. A beautiful perfume of tropical fruits, minerals and spring flowers. It's a beauty and probably underrated in the range of great white wines.

Enjoy it now.

  • Vieux Télégraphe white 2013 – 93/100 Robert Parker - 92/100 Wine Spectator

This Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc 2013 is exceptional and represents this estate very well. Made from 40% Clairette, 30% Grenache, 15% Roussanne and the rest Bourboulenc, all the goodness of La Crau. A classic white of the appellation with lots of fruit, especially pears. Notes of stones, white flowers and great minerality in its medium-bodied body. A concentrated profile. Although sublime today, this one's going to develop for a decade!

Drink now until 2024

  • Vieux Télégraphe white 2012 – 93/100 Robert Parker - 92/100 Wine Spectator

To start with, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc is a blend of around 40% Clairette, 30% Grenache Blanc and the rest Roussanne and Bourboulenc. A textbook Châteauneuf du Pape blanc, it offers clean, pretty notes of white peach, almond green and honeysuckle, as well as a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet very fresh and crisp mouthfeel. Enjoy anytime over the next decade or more.

Enjoy it from now until 2022.

  • Vieux Télégraphe white 1992 – 93/100 Robert Parker

Surprisingly, the 1992 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc showed better than advertised for the 1999. Less rich, less textured, but more dynamic and clean. Nice notes of white flowers, tea leaves, honey, curd, lemon and citrus. A fresh, elegant and chic mid-palate. It almost picks up an old Riesling kiss, like gasoline with time in the glass, and drinks beautifully today.

Enjoy it now.
