? Do you know this beautiful wine estate? The Clos des Fées estate is one of the largest in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. We'd like to introduce you to the estate and its best years! We work directly with the estate, so the wines come from the property.
The great years of Clos des Fées
It was founded in 1997, admittedly with rather rudimentary winemaking methods, but over the years it has produced some great wines. Between grape variety testing, terroir analysis and improved cellar work, the Clos des Fées wines are going to enjoy many fine years.
So what are the estate's great vintages? There are many reasons why we choose certain vintages over others. Naturally, the quality of the weather and of the grapes in the vineyard remain the surest way to talk about a great vintage, but years with an outstanding feature can also make us want to highlight it. And so it is with the first vintage of Clos des Fées.
- The 1998 vintage is the first vintage vinified by dynamic winemaker Hervé Bizeul. A dry, warm vintage that will leave its mark on the Roussillon region, opening winemakers' minds to a new style of wine. Fruity, opulent and fine at the same time. The domaine's touch!
- The 2005 vintage is a great vintage everywhere in France... so it's bound to be one of the estate's greatest. So, yes, the estate was going to experience some difficulties due to the very low rainfall, but in the end, Hervé Bizeul succeeded in producing well-balanced, terroir-driven wines, especially his reds.
- On the contrary, 2007 vintage was a great success, unlike the Bordeaux region. The slightly heavier rainfall meant that the grapes did not suffer from drought, allowing them to develop well. The tension and freshness present in both the whites and the reds will offer superb ageing potential.
- Two anthology vintages... The years 2009 and 2010 are two great vintages that will bring bottles like Petite Sibérie to the pinnacle of France's finest wines. The difference between the 2009 and 2010 vintages lies in their finesse and delicacy. 2009 will be a very hot vintage, with small, thick-skinned grapes producing more powerful wines than 2010, which will produce more delicate wines thanks to lower temperatures.
- The 2011 vintage will be remembered for its perfect weather, balanced grapes and wines with the power of a great vintage, a balance much sought-after thanks to the freshness of the vintage. The estate's fine cuvées, such as Le Clos des Fées in white or red, can be cellared for several more years.
After a few years with good vintages, the year 2015 is going to have some pleasant surprises in store for the estate. Temperatures and sunshine will be above average. July will be a scorcher, allowing the grapes to reach superb ripeness. A few rains in August will swell the grapes without diluting them. Whether white or red, the 2015 vintage is a great one.
The 2017 vintage is a good vintage. One of the last to offer enough hindsight to judge the evolution of the estate's wines. It bears a strong resemblance to 2007A vintage in which the white wines succeeded in coming into their own thanks to cool nights and good weather. A taut, supple vintage.
