In this article, we'll be talking about a place that's one of the areas of excellence of the burgundy: The Faiveley estate. Located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, it was founded in 1825. Their objective is to showcase these exceptional Burgundy terroirs through a style that combines "strength, finesse and elegance". Let's take a look at the history of this domain and talk about his most beautiful cuvées, and hope to have convinced you by the end of this article.

History of the domain :

From Pierre Faiveley founder of the estate, to Erwan who runs the family business, 7 generations of winemakers have perpetuated the heritage since 1825. Many personalities were involved in building the Faiveley estate, but Georges Faiveley remains the mythical figure. The estate suffered a crisis in 1929 that destroyed all wine production. Despite the plummeting economy, in 1934 he joined forces with his friend Camille Rodier to create the Brotherhood Knights of the Tastevin from ancient brotherhoods oenophillic still in existence today. Today, Domaine Faiveley is enjoying great success, expanding into Burgundy's most famous climats, with a wide choice of wines to offer enthusiasts.

With the help of the technical director Jerôme Blur, Erwan Faiveley continues with his father's legacy since the beginning of 2005. Former general manager of Bouchard Bernard Hervet successfully integrated into the wine industry. There has also been an evolution in wine styles: they're much more solid than in the past, with a more advanced emphasis on fruit. Woodlands used to be a little green, but today they have a toasty taste.

For several vintages now, the wines have integrated better, especially the reds. A brand new winery was built for the 2018 harvest. Visit Faiveley estate has been able to develop its wines with unfailing accuracy and intelligence.

Estate wines :

  • Echezeaux "En Orveaux "Grand cru :

The grape variety used is Pinot Noir like most of this estate's cuvées. It reveals itself nicely with plum and berry aromas alongside suggestions of orange peel, soft soil tones, peonies and spice. This is a wine with style fleshy. The robe is limpid with a beautiful dark ruby color. The nose evokes a palette of fruity and toasty scents. Round and fruity on the palate. The tannins give it good aromatic persistence on the finish. It can be cellared for around twenty years and served at a temperature of 16 degrees. Serve with grilled prime rib or wild boar stew.

  • Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" :

A very promising cuvée, blending aromas of smoked berries and plums with notes of oforange peel, musk and spices. It is both concentrated and vibrant, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a finish that is long and fragrant. The wine shows a silky structure and magnificent persistence. It can be kept for 15 to 20 years (depending on the success of the vintage) and can be served between 14 and 16 degrees, with a duck breast with blackcurrant berries.

Mercurey 1 er Cru Le Clos du Roy :

On the nose, scents of red berries mingle comfortably with woody and spicy aromas. Fairly balanced on the palate. Richness combines with fine tannins to produce a racy wine with excellent aromatic persistence. It can be kept for about ten years and served between 14 and 20°C. 16 degrees. Serve with fillet of beef à l'epoisses and lamb chops.

  • Mercurey 1 er Cru Clos des Myglands - Monopole :

On the nose, we notice aromas of fruits black and red with woody, smoky notes. The palate is reminiscent of gourmet fruit flavors. The wine reveals a beautiful amplitude with velvety tannins. It also produces a wine that is both silky and warm. It can be kept for 4 to 8 years. Serve at a temperature of 16 degrees. It goes perfectly with beef fillet, a tian of preserved vegetables, or even a strawberry tart for dessert.
