History of Clos Rougeard!
The famous winery is in the commune of Chacé (Maine-et-Loire), near Saumur. The estate was once owned by the famous winemakers Jean-Louis and Bernard Foucault, better known as "Charly" and "Nady". Sadly, legendary winemaker "Charly" left us too soon, in December 2015.
The great Clos Rougeard estate is a real inspiration for French vineyards, with viticulture based on the know-how and experience of the estate. The values of this terroir are deeply rooted - tradition, respect for the vines, biodynamic viticulture - the domaine uses no weedkillers or pesticides. No label, just a trusted terroir with great complexity. Vinification is done simply, without an oenologist, and it remains a great success. The wines are fine, concentrated and complex.
" The aim is to obtain wines that are both concentrated and fine. And because we're lazy, we intervene as little as possible during the vinification process."
Today, all the great wine connoisseurs are snapping up the bottles of Clos RougeardThis is not only for the chance to taste these rare little parles, but also for the growing reputation of the domaine.
Charly Foucault is gone, but he has left behind a legacy, a history and a rare and unique vineyard. A highly coveted legacy at that, we learned in January 2017 according to a LARVF press release that the estate would probably be bought by Martin Bouygues.

The best vintages of Clos Rougeard
Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" 2010
96/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: October 31, 2014
"This superb wine has a dark red color and a deep, smoky bouquet. Notes of dark berries, rosemary, espresso and cedar wood. Intense and soft, with mocha and hazelnut aromas. Cabernet Franc is full-bodied, extremely dense and concentrated. Although severe and far from ready to taste, it is extremely well-balanced, elegant and very fine. It will be perfect over the next 20 years. This Saumur-Champigny from the one-hectare "Le Bourg" cru, which was planted in 1948, is probably one of the best Cabernet Francs in the world. Although it's not easy to get hold of, it's worth every effort. "
Drink from 2020 to 2040.
Clos Rougeard "Les Poyeux" 2010
95/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date 31: October 2014
"The Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 2010 arrived gradually, with a delicate, very elegant bouquet. It's not a concentrated wine. It has floral and fruity aromas, with Mediterranean herbs, very clear and fresh cherry and wild berry aromas, as well as cedarwood powder. Full-bodied, smooth and intense, this absolutely delicate and elegant red is structured with very fine tannins and delicious acidity that let this persistent wine sing on your palate. It combines finesse with intensity in a most remarkable way and is divinely balanced. "
Drink now or in the next 20-25 years.
Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" 2005
94-95/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: August 31, 2007
"From a single hectare of old vines, Foucault's 2005 Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg - from new barrels, a dozen local oaks dried for six years - presents superb notes of roasted meats, black truffles, roasted nuts, blackcurrant and salt on the nose. Surprisingly deep, fleshy and fruity, with an almost bitter darkness due to the intensity of the fruit skins. Bright red color, rich, textured, pasty. Sweet, yet explosive florality! Deep and spicy, you'll also find hints of wood. Like all Foucault wines, it's straightforward, well-balanced, and I don't think it can go wrong in the years to come. "

Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" 2009
94+/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: October 31, 2014
"Clos Rougeard's Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg 2009 has a strongly smoky aroma and scents of black olive tapenade, sourdough bread, herbal liqueur, as well as black cherries and berries. Extremely powerful and concentrated, but also seductive, fine and elegant, this full-bodied, noble and persistent Cabernet, with silky tannins and well-integrated acidity, has great ageing potential, of at least 20 years if not more than 30! Although it's already devilishly seductive. "

Clos Rougeard "Brézé" 2010
94/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: October 31, 2014
"Clos Rougeard's 2010 Brézé has a beautiful, clear, pure and complex bouquet, presenting tropical fruit flavors, almost bursting with notes of quince, honey, potted ripe pears, ginger, berries, green grapes and a spicy touch of oak.A very full-bodied wine - an intensity that fills the mouth entirely-, yet also very clear, vibrant, direct and refreshing, this Chenin is persistent and savory, delicately racy and zesty. A finish with a touch of sweet oak is noticeable, revealing great aging potential. "

Clos Rougeard "Brézé" 2002
94/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: August 31, 2007
An invigorating nose of lime zest, ocean breeze, and various flowers draws you into a glass of Clos Rougeard 2002 Saumur Breze. Clear, pure citrus, floral perfumes and sparkling minerality combine for a spectacular palate, and the deeply chalky, fleshy and persistent, citric and pit-fruity finish presents a remarkable combination of clarity, buoyancy and sheer concentration. Worth following for at least a dozen years.
(Not to imagine that the Foucault's can do no wrong in my nostrils, I was pretty unhappy with their 2001 white. For notes on the estate's reds, please see coverage of Cabernet Franc elsewhere in this report).
Clos Rougeard "Les Poyeux" 2009
93-100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: October 31, 2014
"The 2009 "Les Poyeux" cuvée has a discreet, rather floral bouquet with a soft core of subtle aromas of mocha, tobacco and black olive tapenade. Full-bodied, concentrated and solidly structured, this textured, persistent, silky wine has a well-hidden power due to its phenomenal vitality and freshness. The tannins are ripe, fine and fairly smooth, but structured. "

Clos Rougeard "Les Poyeux" 2011
92/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: October 31, 2014
"Clos Rougeard's 2011 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux is dressed in a dark red color. Very pure, intense, ripe, concentrated and almost bloody, as well as leathery on the nose, where black olives, licorice, black cherries and wild berries, including raspberries, are on display. The wine starts silky and elegant and develops a crescendo of intense aromas. Concentrated yet sweet black fruits, raspberry and cigar box notes. The tannins are ripe and elegant, and the finish is intense and refined by an important woody note. It's not a big Cabernet Franc, but it's very well balanced. "

Clos Rougeard "Brézé" 2007
92/100 Robert Parker- Tasting date: August 31, 2010
"Scents of lime and pineapple, as well as a whiff of wood smoke, in the nose of Clos Rougeard Brézé 2007, usher in a brilliantly citric, smoky palate, underlying limestone, as well as alkaline traces. This offers a typical example of Chenin, with its density combined with lightness and refreshment. On the finish, this wine offers remarkable tenacity, and a minerality that's hard to describe. As you'll notice in the glass, there are more mysteries than answers - and that's a good thing! I wouldn't hesitate to plan it for a dozen, if not more years, and Nadi Foucault is convinced it will gain an even brighter edge than the 2006. "

Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" 2006
92/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: August 31, 2010
"Playfulness, sweat and saddle leather greet the nose of Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 2006, combined with the sweet ripeness of black fruits, blond tobacco, sage, black pepper and ginger. Given its almost savage, spicy aromas, with a transparent pungency and richness of tender fruit. The texture of this wine offers a striking but gratuitous contrast. Crushed stone, nut paste, blackberry jam, blond tobacco and brown spices inform a long, memorable finish. Lots of pleasure drinking this cru, so don't hesitate to drink it today. "

Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" 2002
92/100 Robert Parker - Tasting date: August 31, 2007
"Foucault's Bourg 2002 presents a complex, aromatic blend of blackberries, smoked meat, resinous herbs, roasted nuts, sautéed mushrooms, flowers and sweat. Smooth-textured, enormously rich and expansive on the palate, it retains an invigorating core of acidity, spreading mineral traces of salt and wet stone, bitter black fruits and pungent herbs, following its long, penetrating, juicy finish. I imagine this will evolve into something like the glorious 1988. "

Clos Rougeard "Le Clos" 2009
90+/100 Robert Parker: Tasting date October 31, 2014
"Le Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny Le Clos 2009 is fragrant and floral on the nose. Flavors of ripe cherries and dark berries indicate a classic Cabernet Franc. Vigorous, well-concentrated and with striking tannins and vital acidity, this pure, medium-bodied wine presents ripe fruit aromas of black olives, dark berries and leather."
Drinkable from this year (2017) until 2030.
