What are the best years for Château Margaux
Comptoir des Millésimes presents the best rated wines from Château Margaux. This ranking is neither fixed nor official, and is based solely on Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate ratings, as well as Wine Spectator's notes on Château Margaux wines. Everyone is free to taste the various prestigious vintages of the greatest château in the Margaux AOC. Here is the ranking of Château Margaux's best vintages:
- Château Margaux 2000
One of the greatest vintages of the late 20th century. The 2000 vintage produced an elegant wine, very smooth on the palate. This is a new form of quality for Château Margaux. As the years go by, the texture of this wine becomes tighter, but retains an incredibly smooth finish and impressive length. It is composed of 90% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% of Merlot.
Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker: "Very complex aromas and great purity. Medium-bodied, with superb blue, red and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak and a unique personality. Elegant and powerful. The color remains very healthy, opaque, blue/purple, but there's no reason to hesitate drinking it young. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there's no need to rush either." (June 2010)
- Châteaux Margaux 1989
The 1989 vintage of Chateau Margaux is Rated 100/100 by James Suckling: A nose offering berries and redcurrants, with dried flowers that evolve into subtle cedar and dried fruit. Structured and full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and a silky texture. It's so tight and powerful, but always late. The palate builds and builds, with amazing tannins. Drink now through 2025.
- Château Margaux 1990
Exceptional weather conditions for this vintage. 1990 is the third in a series of great vintages, along with 1988 and 1989. A wine with charm and great finesse. The 1990 Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot were exceptional, rich and tender, with a tight grain but great softness, and impressive fruitiness. Perfect harmony and great power.
Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker: "It has extraordinary aromatic richness. Spring flowers, camphor, very sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice and no evidence of its 100% oak aging. Round and generous with low acidity but opulent richness, full-bodied and fresh, with laser-like precision, this superb wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should develop for three decades. One of Château Margaux's legendary wines. It can be drunk now, or in twenty or thirty years for the most patient". (June 2009)
- Château Margaux 2010
As great as the 2009 vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) stood up to a dry, cool year, giving this wine a certain aromatic finesse and power. Finally, there are 7% of Merlot, 1.5% of Cabernet Franc and 1.5% of Petit Verdot.
Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker: "The 2010 is brilliant, a deep purple color, pure and intense, with floral notes, enormous opulence. A wine of great nobility. With loads of blueberry, blackcurrant, infused purple fruit and an alcohol level above 13.5% (although this seems modest compared to several other premier crus, including Chateau Latour and Haut-Brion). It should age effortlessly for 30-40 years." (February 2013)
- Château Margaux 2009
2009, one of Château Margaux's greatest vintages. The grapes reached a superb level of concentration, great finesse, beautiful balance and bewitching freshness. An incredible wine, with powerful tannins, softness and fullness. A low alcohol content of 13.3% preserves freshness on the finish, which is delicious and long.
Rated 99/100 Robert Parker: "A very rare level of concentration for this powerful 2009 Château Margaux, made from 87% of Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mainly Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Like most Medocs, the alcohol here is lower than in other Châteaux Margaux. Abundant blueberry, blackcurrant and acacia flower notes, as well as hints of charcoal. Soft, well-integrated tannins and a certain lightness. Rich, round and generous, it should develop for another 30 to 35(+) years." (February 2012)
- Château Margaux 1996
A complicated year, with heavy rainfall in September, which, contrary to what one might have thought, was quite favorable to the ripening process of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which reached an incredible level of purity and fruit quality. Its very dense texture and harmonious shapes offer us a wines of exceptional 1996.
Rated 99/100 by Robert Parker: "Undoubtedly one of the greatest classics produced by Château Margaux. It combines measured power, extraordinary elegance and admirable complexity. The color is purple/opaque. The wine offers pure notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, toast and flowers. Magnificent sweetness, transparent personality and full body. Nothing strays from its quality. The taste is pronounced and long. My instincts suggest this wine will be closed, but right now it's sublime for a newly bottled wine. The fruit is exceptionally sweet and pure. This wine will develop an extraordinary perfume, and possess a very high level of richness. Ripe for 2005-2040. (April 1999)
- Château Margaux 2016
The 2016 vintage of Château Margaux has been rated 99/100 by Lisa-Perrotti Brown : Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Château Margaux (composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot) is composed of sashays of glamorous red currant, candied violet, kirsch and cassis flavors followed by notions of plowed black soil, forest floor, cast-iron pan and cigar box with subtle notes of lavender and oolong tea. Medium-bodied, laced mineral notes float over the palate with an airy, weightless feel, but it's super intense with layers of red and black flavors backed by a firm texture of fine, loamy tannins, finishing wonderfully perfumed and incredibly long. Drink from 2024 to around 2063.
- Château Margaux 1900: the legendary vintage
An impressive harvest, in terms of both quantity and quality, has given birth to a legendary Chateau Margaux 1900.
Robert Parker: "Magnificently rich, with a perfume that must fill an entire room. This is an incredibly unctuous, opulent, focused wine. The fact that it can balance power and flavor, with both finesse and elegance, sets it apart as one of the most extraordinary wines I've ever tasted. Not only can this wine live for another decade, I suspect it could last another 20 to 30 years. A breathtaking wine" (October 1994).
- Château Margaux 2015: an ambitious newcomer
If we were to situate the 2015 Château Margaux in relation to its ancestors, we could say that it will be as stunning in quality as a 2005, a 2009 and a 2010, in its strength, fleshiness and subtlety. What is certain is that the 2015 will offer many surprises for the most patient.
Rated 98-100 Robert Parker: "The bouquet directly targets the senses. The palate is perfectly balanced, with very fine tannins that harmonize with notes of blackberry, blueberry, graphite and cedar. This is a final gift from Paul Pontallier, the gift of a very gifted winemaker." (April 2016)
- Château Margaux 2018: a future of champions?
97-100/100 by Lisa-Perrotti Brown: The 2018 Chateau Margaux is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The grand vin represents 36% of this year's harvest. The wine has a pH of 3.8 and 14% of alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it gives off energetic notes of Morello cherries, black raspberries and blackberry tart, as well as nuances of fragrant earth, candied violets, lavender, sandalwood, unsmoked cigars and black olives, with a gentle wave of blackcurrant and licorice coaxingly emerging. Full-bodied, the palate is endowed with the most astonishing energy, offering layer after layer of red and black fruits with tons of earthy nuances, framed by extremely ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing with astonishing freshness and extraordinarily long length. lingering perfume. Magnificent.
