Jean-Louis switched to biodynamic viticulture in the 1990s, advised first by François Bouchet, then by Pierre Masson. Jean-Louis uses partial de-stemming, cold pre-fermentation maceration, long vatting times and gravity for treading. He uses between 30 and 75% of new barrels, depending on the cuvée. He refuses to use sulfur, either at harvest time or during vinification and ageing, contenting himself with a small dose at bottling. With their succulence and roundness, his wines stand out from the tight, precise type cultivated by his Rossignol cousins.

Grandes cuvées & best vintages from Domaine Trapet

  • Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Alea - Trapet :

This cuvée is produced by sorting grapes from 5 parcels of Premiers Crus (a blend of wines classified as Premiers Crus): Petite Chapelle, Clos Prieur, Les Corbeaux, En Ergot and Les Combotte, all certified biodynamic. It sends out supple, ripe tannins with a lovely freshness . A perfect accompaniment to a delicious duck breast.

  • Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru - Trapet :

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru underwent late malolactic fermentation this year and comes from various lieux-dits: Combottes, En Ergot, Petit Chapelle, Corbeaux and Clos Prieur. The bouquet is clean and precise, pixelated, with scents of blackberry, raspberry leaf and cold limestone. The palate is medium-bodied, with a compact, dense opening. It's linear and concentrated, fresh on the palate but with a grippy finish that suggests it will need a few years in bottle. Very fine.

  • Marsannay Village - Domaine Trapet

Domaine Trapet Marsannay red 2014

Marsannay is generally referred to as a small appellation. In fact, it's small in size, at just 220 hectares. On the other hand, its quality is unquestionable. Let's not forget the potential of its quality, as well as the diversity of its terroirs. Marsannay wines are renowned for their finesse and delicacy.

"The Marsannay Villages 2014This wine, a blend of three vineyards to be bottled separately in 2015, has a severe but well-defined bouquet of blackberry and tinted underbrush, with a subtle marine note developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. I appreciate the purity and harmony here, almost pastille-like towards the smooth finish which is already inviting. This is not the most complex Village Marsannay, however, its purity will seduce you." Tasted on December 31, 2015 by Neal Martin. Rated 88-90/100 Robert Parker

  • Gevrey-Chambertin Village - Domaine Trapet

Gevrey Chambertin Domaine Trapet

Visit Gevrey-Chambertin of the Jean and Jean-Louis Trapet are renowned for their strength and finesse above all else. A fusion of grace and vigor. A very generous wine.

"The Gevrey Chambertin Villages 2014 was a little introspective on the nose when I tasted it from the barrel, not as open as the Villages Marsannay. The palate is better, with succulent blackberry and blueberry notes, remarkably fine tannins and tension towards the linear finish. This is an understated Gevrey-Chambertin, one I suspect will be charming once in the bottle." Tasted on December 31, 2015 by Neal Martin. Rated 88-90/100 Robert Parker

  • Gevrey-Chambertin "Ostrea" - Domaine Trapet

Gevrey Chambertin Ostrea Domaine Trapet

L'Ostrea Gevrey-Chambertin 2015 comes from three parcels of fossil-rich limestone soil. Its bouquet is highly composed and harmonious: fruity blackcurrant and raspberry, with notes of orange sorbet and orange zest emerging over time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. There's real succulence, blue fruit notes that give it a Marsannay-like character towards the mineral finish. It's excellent." Neal Matin, tasted December 30, 2016. Rated 90-92/100 Robert Parker.

  • Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" - Domaine Trapet

Gevrey Chambertin premier cru clos prieur Domaine Trapet

"The Clos Prieur 2009 by Gevrey-Chambertin is a relatively big, masculine wine that fills the mouth with mid-palate density and an expressive, perfumed aroma. It's elegant and impeccably refined to the end, with a striking perfume that lingers in the empty glass. This will be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming year. It's a gem. Trapet owns three parcels at Clos Prieur. Here, Trapet used 35% of whole bunches. Expected maturity: 2019-2029. Tasted on May 2, 2011 by Antonio Galloni, rated 92+/100 Robert Parker.

  • Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Capita" - Domaine Trapet

"The Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Capita 2015 is made from five premier crus: Petite Chapelle, En Ergot, Corbeaux, Combottes and Clos Prieur, and is 100% whole fruit. It has a very elegant bouquet, the addition of stem clearly disguised and barely visible, simply giving freshness and personality to the black and red brambly fruit. The palate is fresh and well-defined, with notes of blood orange infusing the bright red fruit. This has wonderful balance and infectious vigor that I hope will translate once in bottle. This has a lot to offer, one often being the sense of 'fun'." Neal Matin, tasted December 30, 2016. Rated 91-93/100 Robert Parker

  • Latricière-Chambertin Grand Cru - Domaine Trapet

Latriciere Chambertin Grand cru Domaine Trapet

"The 2008 Latricieres-Chambertin speaks of vineyard first and cru second. It shows wonderful freshness, energy and vitality in its sweet, layered fruit. The gorgeous inner perfume and clean, delicate fruit meld beautifully to the sharp, chiseled finish. The 2008 Latricieres is truly majestic. Interestingly, Latricieres is less marked by the vintage than Chapelle. Expected maturity: 2023-2048. This is a fine collection of wines from Jean-Louis Trapet. The domaine cultivates its vines biodynamically. After fermentation, the wines are kept in a cold part of the cellar to delay malolactic fermentation." • Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru - Domaine Trapet

Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Trapet

"The Grand Cru de la Chapelle Chambertin 2015 gives off a magnificent bouquet with nuances of fragrant black cherry and blueberry mingled with subtle aromas of undergrowth and wood. It has razor-sharp precision and superb focus. The palate is medium-bodied with very crisp tannins. There's impressive precision, a seductive sense of energy percolating through the red fruit, merging with more black fruit towards the end. It actually resembles Domaine Dugat's Chapelle Chambertin this year, exuding both expression of terroir and joie de vivre. It's superb." Neal Matin, tasted December 30, 2016. • Chambertin Grand Cru - Domaine Trapet

Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Trapet

"The Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 has a beautifully composed, almost nonchalant bouquet, with intense blackberry and wild strawberry infused with superb mineral tension. You can feel the terroir here tingling on the tongue. The palate is wonderfully balanced with sorbet-like freshness. This one almost jumps around the mouth, barely able to contain its energy and there's a bewitching salinity on the lingering finish. Frankly, this is one of the best Chambertin wines produced in 2015." Neal Matin, tasted December 30, 2016. Rated 96-98/100 by Robert Parker.

History of the domain :

To sum up: The domain Jean & Jean-Louis Trapet was founded in 1919, in Gevrey-Chambertin. During the 20th century, this estate ranked among the best in the region. Today, the estate covers 15 hectares, 13.5 of which are planted with Pinot Noir and 1.5 with Chardonnay. It also includes prestigious appellations such as Grands Crus de Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate converted to biodynamic viticulture in 1995, adding to the change the estate underwent when Jean-Louis married Andrée née Grayer, heiress to the estate in Riquewihr, Alsace. The couple work together to contribute to the evolution of the domaine. The domaine's wines are among the region's most emblematic, especially the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Prieur. Jean-Louis Trapet is a diligent producer who takes great care of his estate. Despite the loss of some of his vines, he still owns a fine estate with three grands crus and two premiers crus. He has enjoyed success with all these cuvées, worthy of the Burgundy domain. Later, Jean Louis was assisted by his children, who came to help him at the Alsatian estate. Recent vintages have been a great success.
