Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 1999
"This fabulous wine reveals notes of toasted vanilla, espresso, but also Asian spices, mocha, pepper, blackberry, creosote and grilled meats. The exotic perfume is followed by a wine with phenomenal intensity, remarkable smoothness, well-integrated tannins, great body, and high fruit concentration. It has been mature since 2006 and will continue to mature until around 2025."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 1988
"Its color is deep purple. Notes of grilled meat and barbecue aromas. Sumptuous, ripe aromas of black plums and cassis. Very textured and full-bodied. Impressive concentration, extraordinary purity, and you don't feel the fact that it spent 42 months at 100% in new oak barrels. Very complete and rich, this will probably be one of the longest cellars for a "La Turque" wine, this wine must be legendary."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 2009
"The 2009 Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" needs time, but there's no denying its quality. This wine is very ripe and voluptuous, with incredible aromas and flavors of cassis, coffee beans, roasted meats, licorice and raw steak. Full-bodied, muscular and powerful. There's a very fine mid-palate, but with building tannins and a long-lasting finish. Composed of 93% of Syrah and 7% of Viognier, it is much more masculine and dense than the "La Mouline" cuvée, and will need additional cellaring time to reach its peak."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 2010
"The 2010 and 2009 continue to blow me away every time I taste them, and for me, they represent the pinnacle of Côte Rotie, even if their styles are very different. The 2010 Côte Rotie is a much more virile wine. Its inky black color is followed by classic notes of smoked meats, scorched earth, licorice and abundant black fruits. Big, rich, tannic and structured, don't expect to touch the bottles until at least 2020."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 2005
"Crème de cassis, blackcurrants, chocolate, barbecued meats and bacon grease literally burst from the glass of this full-bodied, structured and perfectly balanced Côte-Rotie. We're at the very beginning of its potential, it's still young. A few more years in the cellar, and we'll keep it for 2-3 decades.
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 2003
"An incredible perfume of smoky herbs, charred meats, violets, licorice and cassis gives way to a huge, unctuous, powerful Coast with a mass of ripe, sweet tannins, full-bodied richness and a finish that just won't quit. Enjoy this heavenly elixir over the next two or three decades."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 1995
"While tasting through the profound Côte Rôties elaborated by Marcel Guigal, one of the pleasures was to taste all the 1995 bottles. Reviewed in previous issues, they are even better in bottle than they were during their education (characteristic of many Guigal wines). The 1995 Côte Rôtie la Turque is legendary and as compelling as its readers expect. This unique vineyard wine will have at least two decades of longevity."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 1988
"Dark purple in color, with grilled meat and smoky barbecue aromas beginning to emerge, as well as sumptuously ripe aromas of black plums and cassis. It's not as aromatically repressed as La Mouline. This wine is thick with a smooth, full-bodied texture. It's about to reach its peak. The wine shows impressive concentration, extraordinary purity and, surprisingly, no evidence of the 42 months spent in new oak barrels at 100%. Very complete and rich, this wine should be legendary. Enjoy it now.
Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 2009
"Much more forthright and easy to read than the 2010, Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 2009 is an incredible wine. There are notes of smoked meats, game, black olives, charcoal, wood, raspberries and pepper that soar and hit the palate with impressive concentration. Hard to resist. Despite its rich fruit, it has a huge core of tannin and needs at least another 4-5 years. Like the 2010, it will have half a century or more of longevity."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 2010
"A wine certainly not for those seeking instant gratification. A powerful powerhouse offering deep, masculine notes of crushed rocks, smoked meats, game, espresso, assorted dark cassis and cassis-like fruit. Full-bodied, tight, structured and backward, with fabulous mid-palate density and length, it should be forgotten in the cellar for a decade, but its overall longevity will be 40-50 years."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 2005
"The 2005 Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" has impressive depth. Highly colored, structured, tannic, massively concentrated, always with phenomenal texture and great richness. Very fruity and tapenade notes. However, at just 11 years old, this wine is still an infant. It will need 4-5 years and will have a longevity of over 50 years."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1999
To drink a Côte-Rôtie today, you can't do better than the Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1999 ("La Mouline" 1999 perhaps). A monumental Côte-Rôtie with an incredible perfume of blackcurrant, licorice, smoked game and roasted herbs, it's rich and full-bodied, with a seamless texture and a finish that won't quit. A massive wine of incredible density. This wine is lively, elegant and light, with great smoothness and polished tannins."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1998
"A perfect wine ... at least for my palate. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary nose of smoke, incense, tapenade, creosote, blackberry and cassis aromas. Flavors of blackberry, truffle, chocolate and leather abound. The wine has high tannins, but perfect harmony, impeccable balance and magnificent integration of acidity, alcohol and tannins."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1990
"A perfect wine! Fortunately, over 800 cases were produced. It has an opaque black color and a huge nose of truffle, licorice, cassis and pepper. Although it's one of the most concentrated wines I've ever poured into my palate, it's perfectly balanced, with adequate underlying acidity, huge extraction of ripe fruit and tannin, and a phenomenal finish of 70 seconds or more. This is the essence of Syrah! "
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1988
"An opaque purple color and a closed (tasted in 1997) but exciting nose of truffles, minerals, Asian spices and fruitcake. When the wine hits the palate with its enormous weight and flavor extraction, you can't help but be seduced by such richness and purity. Nevertheless, there's still a remarkably high level of tannin (sweet rather than astringent), a youthful, unevolved fruit character and flavors that stain the palate. After tasting this wine, you feel like you're brushing your teeth ... it's so rich. "
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 2003
"It continues to impress me every time I taste it and is a desert island wine for me. One of the stars of this extreme vintage, it offers sensational levels of fruit and decadence, fragrant and intense aromas, beautiful freshness and incredible texture. A finish to die for. Still young, with masses of soft tannins, it's nonetheless a heavenly drink today."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Landonne" 1985
"Once again, the darkest, thickest, most powerful and concentrated Côte-Rôtie of this vintage. Like its two siblings, it casts a heavy sediment. The inside of the bottle resembles that of a 15-year-old port. The color is still a cloudy, hazy violet. The nose offers aromas of beef, vitamins (iron?), minerals, smoke and truffles. Extremely thick, full-bodied and massive, with remarkable tannins. A remarkable success! Expected maturity: 2000-2025.
Guigal Côte-Rôtie "La Mouline
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2003
"An incredible wine, like the other vintages of this vintage. Loaded with fruit, it possesses extreme richness. Unveiling all its notes of plum, flowers, old pot and smoked meats. This wine, still too young, is full-bodied, massive and layered on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate, thrilling textures and a blockbuster-like finish. It's still as good as it gets."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2009
"La Mouline" 2009 (which incorporates 11% of Viognier) offers an impressive bouquet: notes of roasted meats, toast, spices, caramelized meats, coffee beans, blackberries and blackcurrants. Deep and intense. As with the 2010, it possesses great richness, a concentrated mid-palate and a magnificent varnish of tannins. Drink it now or over the next 2-3 decades."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1989
A beautiful purple color for "La Mouline" 1989, this is an explosive, rich wine with great depth. There's a perfume of violets, creamy black raspberries and toasty new oak. Very full-bodied, with masses of fruit, a smooth texture and a powerful finish. This wine manages to be balanced with intensity and great elegance.
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1990
"Great depth, with a garnet color. The 1990 Côte-Rôtie "La Mouline" presents earthy, meaty, leathery, sandalwood aromas, hints of dried plums, aniseed and dried mint. It builds elegantly on the palate. Silky, acidic tannins are gently refreshed. The flesh is rich, and the palate is perfumed by lingering notes of dried berries, meat and spices."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1991
"The black/purple-colored 1991 La Mouline seems to be a perfect wine in the making, with a stunning bouquet of violets, bacon grease, sweet cassis fruit and toasty oak. The wine has superb density. It tastes even richer and more concentrated than in its early years. With 8% of Viognier in the blend and extremely low yields (only 400 cases produced), this is a phenomenal wine. I find it more seductive than the near-perfect 1990. "
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2010
"Incorporating 11% of Viognier and sourced from the steep, terraced vineyards of the lieu-dit Côte Blonde, it sports a heavenly bouquet of spring flowers, incense, violets, charcuterie and sweet cassis. Full-bodied, voluptuous and fluid, Syrah doesn't get any more seductive, sexy or impressive."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2005
"It's perfectly balanced, deeply concentrated and shockingly rich, with a seamless, elegant and silky character. Not to be missed. Abandoning notions of smoky beef, iron, spring flowers and ripe black raspberries, there's nothing out of place about this classic La Mouline, its purity and precision and incredible length. More in the style of 2010."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1999
"Explosive aromas and flavors of blackberry, smoked meat, pepper and exotic flowers, this puppy hits the palate with full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration and a seamless, sexy and oh-so-fine texture. This is another wine that will continue to evolve with elegance."
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1988
"Among so many exceptional La Mouline, this is one of the most profound. Still dark purple in color, with just a hint of Mouline's flamboyant aromatics, it's thick, highly concentrated, full-bodied and tannic, fruit-laden, massive and full-bodied, but still needs time to lose itself completely. A coat of tannins. This will probably be the longest-lived La Mouline since 1978 and 1969. Drink now.
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1983
"This wine reveals a distinctive aroma of violets, black currants, bacon fat, blended with components of smoked duck and Asian spices. Extremely full-bodied and robust, with well-perceived tannins. This La Mouline is powerful, concentrated, and less seductive than many vintages. In fact, in 1983, the advantage leans more towards La Landonne. It can be drunk today.
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1978
"In 1978, Côte Rôtie La Mouline possessed an otherworldly, full-bodied texture, going hand in hand with a rich, fragrant bouquet of forest floor, sweet blackcurrant, olive, undergrowth and game. This great Cote Rotie is fully mature.
- Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 1976
"The 1976 is even thicker, richer and more jammy than some of La Mouline's other grands crus. It's essentially a dry red table wine and a vintage port. Of course, it's not sweet, but it's so concentrated; you simply don't see wines like this except Petrus 1947 or Cheval Blanc 1947. It offers a divine bouquet of sweet, floral-infused black fruits/raspberries/currants. Extremely unctuous and viscous, with staggering concentration, this wine has always been exceptional to drink, but it continues to defy the aging curve."
