In-which-wine-invest-vosne-romanee

We have chosen to use the word investment, not to advise you to buy this or that bottle in order to make a capital gain in a few years' time, but rather to invest in certain estates or appellations that will be more difficult to access financially in a few years' time. Here are the best Vosne Romanée wines for cellar investment.

THE WORLD'S MOST MYTHICAL WINES

"Burgundy has done nothing better than this little corner where it has gathered its enchantments". Gaston RoupnelBurgundian writer

☀  Vosne-Romanée wines are among the most famous in the world, highlighted by Grand Crus such as La Romanée-Conti and Grand Cru La Tache. The appellation is located in the Côte de Nuit between Vougeot and Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côte d'or department. The wines are produced in two communes, Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, at altitudes of between 250 and 300 meters.

The appellation was instituted in 1936 and today covers 180 hectares exclusively in red, with Pinot Noir as the sole grape variety. Of the 224 hectares of vines, 150 are occupied by climats en lieux-dits (there are 25) and 14 climats en premiers crus. Among these lieux-dits and premiers crus, some climats stand out. These include the "Aux Réas" climats and Henry Jayer's "Cros Parantoux" premier cru...

72.12 hectares of vines complete these 150 hectares. There are 8 Grands Crus, including the famous Romanée-Conti and Romanée Saint-Viviant, each with its own distinctive character.

AN EXCEPTIONAL TERROIR

? The world's greatest wines are concentrated in these few hectares. Calcareous soils with clayey marl at depth, varying from 1 metre to several dozen metres.  The quality of the exposure of the vines, combined with the magnificent terroir and the Pinot Noir grape variety, result in some of the most complete and sought-after wines in Burgundy. You'll need to wait several years before opening a bottle of this appellation, which develops a complex palate with powerful yet silky tannins. The nose and mouth offer notes of undergrowth, leather and truffles. A complete palette of aromas to accompany powerful red meats and game dishes.

  • Vosne-Romanée 2016 - David Duband ?

Pierre Duband created the domaine in 1965, producing grapes on some 15 hectares which he sold to the Beaune cooperative. In 1991, he decided to expand the estate and bought parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges 1.er Cru. The same was true in subsequent years, with vines in the Hautes-Côtes and this time in Vosne-Romanée. The pivotal year for the domaine was 1995, when David took over from his father Pierre and continued to expand the estate. The estate's Vosne-Romanée is quite powerful and racy. Vinification is carried out with 80% of whole grapes, followed by pigeage and remontage. All these techniques add density to the wine. The palate is rich and powerful, with notes of black fruit and candied blackcurrant. The palate is just as powerful, with a long finish. A fine start to a Vosne-Romanée to be waited for a few years.

  • Vosne Romanée 1er Cru 2018 Les Chaumes - Daniel Rion ?

Daniel Rion founded the family business in 1955, starting with 2 hectares of vines in the commune of Vosne-Romanée.

Until 1978, the domaine sold its juice exclusively to Burgundy wine merchants, but with the arrival of his sons in the late 70s, the domaine took a new direction. A new winery was built, along with a larger cellar, enabling the domaine to sell its wines directly on site. In 1995, Daniel handed over the running of the estate to his sons. Today, the family estate covers 18 hectares in 18 different appellations, including 3 parcels in Vosne-Romanée, and produces around 100,000 bottles a year. Their premier cru, Les Chaumes, is situated at an altitude of 250 meters, and has vines that are around fifty years old. The deep, clay-loam soils provide good drainage and excellent minerality. You'll have to wait another ten years to taste this wine and discover floral notes, stewed fruit and, with patience, tertiary notes of humus and leather. Great complexity for this high-flying premier cru at an affordable price. There's no better way to discover the Vosne-Romanée terroir...

  • Vosne Romanée 1er Cru 2017 En Orveaux - Mongeard Mugneret ?

We've already told you about Domaine Mongeard Mugneret, one of Burgundy's "domaines à suivre". The estate has a parcel of 1.08 hectares with vines aged between 25 and 50 years. Premier Cru En Orveaux offers rustic, full-bodied, straightforward wines with a fresh finish to balance them out. Completely different from the previous wine described, as it is more "in-your-face" and denser. Here again, it will be interesting to taste the wine in at least ten years to discover the full potential of this lovely terroir.

A real wine to enjoy with game or mature meats.
