  • Coche Dury

Robert Parker describes Jean-François Coche-Dury as "one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth", and few would want to stand out from the crowd. Extremely low yields and meticulously precise vinification are what give the wines their character and intensity. Its best wines spend an astonishing 22 months in barrel, lightly fined but never filtered before bottling. What makes a domaine a cult? This is probably the most internationally sought-after of all the white Burgundy domains. You can expect to understand why the wines are so good. Are the yields low? Not exceptionally. Is there any magic during vinification or ageing? Sometimes I think it's just that Jean François Coche-Dury has green fingers (and now his son Raphaël). His reds are beautiful, perfumed wines too, although they come mainly from lesser appellations. They are de-stemmed and only lightly extracted during a relatively short vinification. They can be an excellent, inexpensive choice for restaurants. The domaine has numerous cuvées on Meursault. Tasting of Meursault 1er Cru Perrières 2015 by William Kelley: "It's extraordinary, and one of the finest white Burgundies of the vintage, revealing in the glass notes of lemon oil, Anjou pear, crushed chalk, marzipan and subtle sesame oil, elegantly framed by a judicious application. of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, extremely concentrated and persistent, with a satiny structuring extract, astonishing mid-palate depth and a long, unfailingly precise finish."

  • Domaine Guy Roulot

Jean-Marc Roulot has been at the helm of the company since 1989, when he decided to stay in the vineyards rather than pursue a full-time career as an actor on stage and film. He went on to create a fine estate in the highest league. He is one of the few producers to have managed to move from heavier to purer wines without losing any of the wine's potential quality and complexity. Everything is still in place, both the greatest appeal of fabulous white Burgundy and the more detailed subtleties of the subtle differences from one terroir to another. Meursault 1er Cru Perrières 2017 tasting by William Kelley "Great potential. Unfolding in the glass with aromas of lemon and lime zest, acacia honey, beeswax and crushed chalk. The wine is medium-bodied, concentrated and incredibly intense, with a satiny attack, ending with a mineral, pungent finish. This is a very good Meursault Perrières that will require some bottle age. "

  • Pierre-Yves Colin Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is one of the most exciting young producers in the Burgundy. The latest in a long line of Burgundy growers, Pierre Yves Colin-Morey knows the region's vineyards and winemakers inside out. These relationships enable him to select the best portions of crops from his favorite sites every year. Colin-Morey is strict about quality and his standards are very high. If he feels that a particular wine, once fermented, is not of an acceptable caliber, he will sell it in bulk rather than see it bottled. The wines see no batonnage during their 15-18 month period, and are coveted by connoisseurs and collectors the world over. Tasting notes from Antonio Galloni: "The Meursault Genevrieres 2009 takes hold of the mouth and never lets go. This is simply wonderful juice. Layers of ripe, expressive fruit emerge from the glass in this rich, captivating Meursault. A vein of minerality appears mid-palate, adding freshness and proportion to the colorful finish. This is a Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey success story.

  • Domaine D'auvenay

Domaine d'Auvenay is run by Lalou Bize-Leroy, a winemaker who, according to Robert Parker, has declared: "She's practically alone at the top of the quality hierarchy in Burgundy...her wines embarrass much of what's produced in Burgundy." In Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide, Domaine d'Auvenay was ranked among the rare producers "remarkable" five stars, claiming that their wines are: "among the richest, most complex and most respectful of the ages of white Burgundy".. Tasting of Meursault 1er cru Les Gouttes d'Or by William Kelley: "Opening in the glass with notes of pear, peach, oats and hazelnut cream, the 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Les Gouttes d'Or is always reserved for youth, but this is another wine with extraordinary depth and cellaring potential. On the palate, it's full-bodied, textured and complete, with immense concentration and mellow extract, with the kind of structure and stony grip one would more usually associate with a red wine. The finish is really long."

  • Henri Boillot

The Boillots have been farming in Burgundy since 1885. The quality of Domaine Boillot wines, including the impressive and exclusive monopole Les Mouchères, is a testament to their hard work in the vineyards and cellars.

  • Michel Bouzereau & Fils

Michel Bouzereau comes from a large wine-growing family and was president of the Union des producteurs de Bourgogne. He's a voice to be heard. And what he likes to talk about is the traditional way of making wine. He ferments in barrels and gives his wines nine months on their lees. Determined that his wines should smell and taste like wine, the importance of new wood is acknowledged but downplayed. Michel's son, Jean Baptiste, is now in charge of producing the seventeen wines from this 11-hectare estate. The domaine holds numerous AOC Meursault cuvées. Meursault 1er cru les Charmes-Dessus 2014 tasting by Neal Martin: "Aromas of apple blossom and granite. The palate is well balanced with good density on the palate, but it needs more delineation and minerality, more finesse towards the finish. There's something almost conservative about this Meursault."

  • Louis Latour

Visit Louis Latour House is one of Burgundy's most respected négociants élévateurs. Maison Louis Latour is the producer of some of Burgundy's finest wines, but has also pioneered the production of fine wines from outside the confines of Burgundy. These wines from the Ardèche and Côteaux de Verdon are slowly gaining esteem for their incomparable quality outside Burgundy.

All the grapes from the Latour family's vineyards are vinified and matured in the beautiful winery at Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The cellar was the first purpose-built winery in France and remains the oldest still in operation. A unique rail system with elevators enables the entire winemaking process to be carried out using gravity. This eliminates the risk of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Visit Louis Latour wine prices are among Meursault's most affordable.

  • Vincent Dancer

Vincent Dancer grew up in Alsace, where he inherited his father's love of wine and photography. After studying engineering, his father suggested he spend some time in Burgundy, where his family owned vineyards rented from cousins. The dancer was immediately hooked and decided to settle in Chassagne-Montrachet and make wine from the five hectares of well-situated vines. The cellar is small, even by Burgundy standards, and despite Dancer's reclusive nature, the wines are well known to a small circle of restaurateurs and wine lovers who take their tiny allocation each year.

Dancer was the first producer in Chassagne to become certified organic, and there are less than a handful left. He remains quietly individualistic, creating his own lean, bright and flavorful winemaking style, trusting his instincts and experience to craft the best possible wine in his own way. Yet each cuvée is a true reflection of its terroir. Meursault Perrières, rich and unctuous, to Chassagne Tete-du-Clos, as fresh as ever. It's no exaggeration to say that Vincent Dancer's wines are majestically unique, exceptionally delicious and well worth the effort.

  • Bouchard Père & Fils

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the world's oldest Burgundy wine and one of the largest landowners in the Côte d'Or. Over the centuries, the House has focused on securing renowned parcels to produce exceptional Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Uncompromising quality standards, long-term producer partnerships and ageing in a state-of-the-art winery result in wines of exceptional consistency and the truest, most refined expression of each terroir. The prix des Vins de Bouchard offers excellent value for money.

Characteristics of Meursault wines

Meursault is a large village on the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Its wines are considered as prestigious as those of its neighbor to the south, Puligny-Montrachet. This is despite the fact that Meursault has no Grand Cru vineyards. There are more great producers here than in any other commune of the Côte d'Or, and its wines are typically rich and flavorful with notes of hazelnut, honey and butter, spicy vanilla and oak. Although much larger than its southern neighbors, Chassagne and Puligny, Meursault contains no Grand Crus. However, its three best Premiers Crus produce some of the region's finest whites.

Meursault's production consists almost entirely of white wines, made from Chardonnay grapes. The commune's wines are reputed to be among the richest, full-bodied whites in Burgundy. Tasting notes typically mention butter, almonds and roasted hazelnuts, alongside finer citrus and mineral elements. The geological differences across the commune's vineyards are remarkably perceptible in their wines. Less than 5% of its vineyards are planted with pinot noir, destined for red wines. In fact, the reds from a small group of vineyards to the north of the commune are produced under the Volnay appellation, Meursault's northern neighbor. These sites all fall under the Volnay Santenots title for their red wines, but the Meursault Santenots Blancs, Santenots du Milieu and Les Plures titles for their white wines.
