great 1958 wines at the best prices

Visit 1958 vintage is a vintage whose quality varies greatly depending on the appellation. To begin with, the Bordeaux region has been very difficult, and the wines of this vintage are not wines for laying down, and are therefore no longer good to drink, save them for the collection. EXCEPT for the Sauternes AOC, which has come through with some very interesting wines to taste. It's a great experience to taste an old vintage such as 1958 in Sauternes. What we can recommend, as announced by LARVF Decemberin 1958 the best to taste is a Rivesaltes (Vin doux naturel) from Domaine Cazes (buy this wine here).

  • We won't press the vintage 1968 because it was very mediocre. However, a number of great châteaux have made fine efforts to stand out from the crowd: Château Cantemerle, Figeac, Château Haut-Brion, Château Latour or Mission Haut-Brion in Bordeaux and the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Visit 1978 vintage was difficult at first, particularly in the Bordeaux region. Then, all of a sudden, an incredible anticyclone developed in the south of France. This pleasant event enabled the Bordeaux reds to have a superb vintage, with the Médoc at the top of the list.

A happy winner from this vintage: the Rhônewith its superb, concentrated, tannic wines. Burgundy was also a success, for both red and white wines. This vintage produced great wines for laying down.

Visit 1988 vintage was superb in the French vineyards, with an ideal climate and generous weather that year. However, the vintage demanded patience on the part of the winemakers. The different winegrowers had to wait for optimum ripeness before harvesting, but also to keep a close eye on yields. It was a great vintage for Sauternes.

Weather conditions varied greatly in 1998. Preceded by a superb mild winter, spring began with frosts in April (including in Languedoc). But late spring stabilized nicely, with warm temperatures and dry weather. Flowering came fairly early in most French vineyards. The vintage got off to a good start, albeit with a cold spell in June. In Bordeaux, it's the year of the Merlot! From Bordeaux to Alsace, ripening conditions were superb. In Burgundy, the reds excelled, particularly in Côte-de-Nuits, with deep, seductive wines. The greatest success of the 1998 vintage was in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC! The Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape were particularly noteworthy.

Difficult weather that year. Vineyards from the Loire to the South-West suffered frosts in April. Then came hail and snails, which attacked the vines. Summer was also difficult, cold, grey and wet. Everyone thought it was going to be a disastrous year, but September saved the vines! A very sunny month, which gave rise to some lovely surprises. In Bordeaux, yields were very low, but the quality of the vintage was much higher than in 2007, with some very nice surprises in certain appellations. A fine year for Champagnes. Alsace wines are heterogeneous, but the strong September sunshine enabled late-ripening grape varieties to achieve excellent results. Burgundy also had a rainy summer, but then came the anti-cyclone in mid-September. A big surprise, it's the Happy End for Burgundy winegrowers. The red wines are very fleshy, with beautiful colors. Burgundy whites, particularly Chardonnay, are of a very high standard. Chablis also produced some very fine wines. On the podium for this vintage, we see number 1 Bordeaux sweet wines with the Sauternes appellation, but also the Rhône region.
