We have chosen to use the word investment, not to advise you to buy this or that bottle in order to make a capital gain in a few years' time, but rather to invest in certain estates or appellations that will be more difficult to access financially in a few years' time. Here are some great Pommard wines for cellar placement.

A BURGUNDY WITH A REPUTATION OVERSEAS: POMMARD

☀  Visit Pommard wine is undoubtedly one of the most famous Burgundy wines abroad, especially in England. Present only in the commune of PommardLocated between Beaune and Volnay, this 341-hectare appellation was one of the first AOCs to be instituted in 1936, and produces exclusively red wines from Pinot Noir grapes.

Pommard is very well known across the Channel, as in the Middle Ages it was considered THE benchmark for Burgundy wines. The wines are planted on ancient alluvial soils in the middle of the slopes. If you go a little higher, the vines benefit from clay-limestone soils for the best terroirs. For the more fortunate, a little further up, the Oxfordian marls of the Jurassic era, combined with the brown limestone soils, add complexity and another dimension to the wines.

POMMARD: MANY PREMIERS CRUS, NO GRANDS CRUS

?   You get the idea, visit Pommard wines do not have Grands Crusbut have a plethora of premiers crus : 28 to be exact, each with its own typicity depending on its geographical location. Some Premier Crus stand out from the crowd, such as "Les Rugiens", "Les Bertins" and "Les Epenots".

It's often said that Pommard wines are powerful and dense, compared to the neighboring Volnay appellation, which is considered more delicate. But this is not the case... of course, there is a trend towards more pronounced tannins. But some villages to the south of Pommard are remarkably velvety and delicate.

It is therefore important to be familiar with the premier cru de Pommard that you'll be buying and what you want, as the texture and fruit can be completely different. As a general rule, these wines go perfectly with red meats, rib steaks or butcher's cuts with a little character. The more delicate Pommards can be enjoyed with stews and sauces. The silkiness and roundness of the wine won't overwhelm the dishes, and will go very well with them.

  • Bouchard Père & Fils

We've chosen to talk to you about the "Bouchard Père & Fils" trading house because, if certain climates are well chosen (which we are:) ), the wines are very good value for money, and this is the case for the Pommard premier cru that we're going to present to you.

We're talking about a négociant, but Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy's finest. Formalized in the 1800s, the house quickly became a sure bet, acquiring climats in the finest appellations. In 1995, Bouchard Père & Fils took over the management of the company, bringing its style and wines back to life.
Thomas Seiter has been general manager since 2018 and leads the vineyard with a masterful hand.

?   Pommard 1er Cru Les Pézerolles

This premier cru in the northern part of the appellation owes its name to the family who once owned the parcel. With a surface area of 5.91 hectares, Maison Bouchard produces 0.31 hectares. After spending between 12 and 14 months in barrel, including 30% in new barrels, this Pommard needs to rest.

After aging for 5 to 10 years, or even more than 10 years for the most patient among you, the wine will release a lovely, intense bouquet of ripe fruit and animal notes typical of Burgundies with character.

  • Domaine de Montille

Founded in 1750, the estate has undergone a number of upheavals over the years. At the time, the estate was a gold mine, owning no less than 12 hectares in appellations such as Chambolle Musigny Bonnes Mares and premier cru Les Amoureuses. Difficulties forced the family to part with these magnificent plots. The estate was left with just 3 hectares of vines.

It wasn't until the arrival of Hubert de Montille, a passionate pioneer who juggled the management of the family estate with the family's second tradition: being a man of the law (most of the men in the family are lawyers).

Right from his first harvest, he decided not to sell his grapes to wine merchants, but to produce his own wine. Today, Etienne and Alix, his children, have taken over the reins of the domaine, after training in a number of different establishments. They perpetuate the tradition of well-made wines with character, and are always looking to expand in the Côte de Nuits.

?  Pommard 1er Cru Grands Epenots 2017

Les Epenots is without doubt the most Pommard of Pommards... The Grands Epenots parcel has been classified as a Pommard Grand Cru, so perfectly does it characterize the appellation.

The Grand Cru has a pure, elegant style, without too much artifice, to allow the terroir to express itself. The family's touch on this wine is to help it express itself with greater fullness and finesse, while retaining interesting ageing potential. As you can see, its price is already over €100, but it could take off even higher ...

  • Joseph Faivelay Estate

A domaine to watch if you want to discover the full range of wines Burgundy has to offer.

Even if the domaine is not very "confidential", the wines of Domaine Faivelay deserve to be tasted. It was in 1825 that Pierre Faivelay set up his wine merchant business as a sideline to his trade as a shoemaker. It was in the late 1840s that he decided to devote himself entirely to wines. Many Faivelays have gone on to head the estate, but it's now the younger generation, the 7th, who are at the helm. Erwan in 2005, then Eve Faivelay in 2014. The estate's guiding principle is to produce top-quality, terroir-driven wines.

Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 2018

As mentioned above, Les Rugiens is one of Pommard's finest climats. Its wines are rich, complex and powerful. That's exactly what this early vintage brought out of the grapes. After a great deal of work in the cellars, the wine is aged in barrels (including 30% in new barrels) for 14 months.

After about ten years, notes of spice, black fruit and tobacco emerge. The tannins are present but well-coated, and offer magnificent persistence on the palate.
