GRANDS CRUS vintages by Bouchard Père et Fils
Montrachet Grand Cru 2016
94-96/100 Neal Martin
There's only half the amount of 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru this year (though that said, it's probably a multiple of what other Montrachet producers have inherited). The bouquet has that marine tinge like La Cabotte oyster shell and cave scents underlying the citrus. The palate is well-balanced with a fine line of acidity, a sake-like mouthfeel, a mocking intensity towards the end. You can just feel the presence of this Montrachet, the opening chapter of a great wine. It will take several years to reach its peak, but it will be worth the wait.
Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru 2016
94-96/100 Neal Martin
The Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet 2016 has a detailed bouquet with attractive scents of white chocolate and almond tincturing citrus. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite cohesive and understated at first (like the Domaine Leflaive tasted earlier that day) with a seductive, compelling finish that's overdone with minerals and a hint of tangerine. It's a very impressive and sophisticated Chevalier-Montrachet that I actually preferred on La Cabotte this year.
Chambertin Grand Cru "Clos de Bèze" 2014
96/100 Neal Martin
Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2014 showed a little more maturity on the nose compared to its peers, suggesting a slightly later picking than other producers. With aeration, it gains more and more clarity, offering scents of potpourri, chalk and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the acidity well-judged but very backward and clearly needing several years to open up. A serious Clos de Bèze for those with patience, this Bouchard rubs shoulders with more prestigious names and I bet it's not as expensive. Hats off to you. Tasted in September 2017.
Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2015
95/100 Bruce Sanderson
An intense, vibrant red, offering an immediate impact of ripe, fresh cherry, strawberry, rose, spice and mineral flavors. Fruity, open and seamless, it seems almost a little too simple, but continues to intensify to give a long, pure and saturated aftertaste. Best from 2022 to 2038.
Corton Grand Cru "Le Corton" 2015
95/100 Bruce Sanderson

Beaune-Grèves 1er Cru "Vigne de l'enfant Jésus" 2015
92/100 William Kelley
The Beaune 1er Cru 2015 Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus was a great success in 2015The bouquet is very fruity, with crushed blackcurrant, red cherry, caramelized orange, asphalt and new cedar oak. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, intense and full-bodied, with severe acidity and considerable length, its fine tannins asserting themselves on the firm, grippy finish. Although this is currently rather primitive, its raw materials are impressive and should develop very well: it's telling that an opened bottle has been improving for several days.
Beaune-Grèves 1er Cru "Vigne de l'enfant Jésus" 2016
91-93/100 Neal Martin
There must have been some divine intervention on the 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vignes de l'Enfant Jésus because it was less affected by frost than the surrounding vineyards. It has a really lovely, pure bouquet with abundant scents of blackberry, raspberry and crushed strawberry with crushed violets and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, silky tannins, still some oak to subsume but there's superb substance on the sumptuous finish. I bet this is one of the best value wines of 2016.
Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de la Mousse" 2015
92/100 Bruce Sanderson
Notes of black cherry and plum permeate this dense red, made approachable by a round profile and open texture. Should be better in a year or two, but the lush fruit makes this enjoyable now. Best from 2019 to 2028.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Combettes" 2015
91-93/100 Neal Martin
The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes has concentrated Granny Smith apple and a fragrant wet granite bouquet that perhaps doesn't have the vigor of Champs-Gains yet. The palate is clean on entry with fine focus, again, commendable salinity here with excellent precision on the lingering finish. Once the aromatics enter their stride, this should be a superb Puligny from Bouchard Père. To be watched closely.
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gain 2015
91-93/100 Neal Martin
The 2015 1er Cru Champ Gain Puligny-Montrachet has a lovely bouquet of walnut and subtle praline scents that seep into citrus. There's certainly good intensity here. The palate is fresh and vibrant with lively acidity, fuller-bodied than Bouchard's two Meursault premiers crus and bridled with lovely salinity on the lightly oaky finish that invites you in for another sip. Excellent - one of Bouchard Père's choices this year.
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Cailles" 2015
95/100 Bruce Sanderson
This is pure, with delicate aromas of cherry, raspberry, rose, graphite and stone, aligned with a firm, well-integrated matrix of tannins. Persists on the lingering aftertaste. Elegant and sophisticated. Best from 2023 to 2042.
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Poulettes" 2015
On the nose, fruity notes, black fruits, smoky and woody notes. A deep bouquet. On the palate, rich, generous flesh with well-developed tannins. A wine that faithfully expresses the strong personality of its terroir. Great ageing potential, around 7 to 10 years or more.
Volnay 1er Cru "Caillerets" 2015
92-94 Neal Martin
The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" would certainly be one of my Bouchard choices for this vintage. It has a lovely, expressive, terroir-driven bouquet, with notes of red cherry, crushed strawberry and damp limestone. There's impressive de-lineation here. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced with caressing, supple tannins that distort the structure underneath. I love the energy, the thrill here and the length lingers in the mouth, a hint of orange peel and Moroccan spice on the aftertaste. Hats off to you!
Volnay 1er Cru "Caillerets" 2010
90/100 Bruce Sanderson
Judiciously woody, it lends accents of licorice and vanilla to flavors of black cherry and minerals. Vibrant and firmly structured, tightening on the finish. Best from 2015 to 2023.
Volnay 1er Cru "Caillerets" 2006
91/100 David Schildknecht
The 2006 Volnay Caillerets Ancien Cuvée Carnot - from a parcel whose acquisition in 1775 marked Bouchard's inauguration - was also the harvest that kicked off this vintage. At this address, the finest expression of ripe black fruit from one of the Côte de Beaune collections: scents of blackberry and violet mingle with a polished palate of refined tannins, sweet fruit intensity and underlying chalk. the name of his site. A keen sense of animated exchange of floral fruit, mineral, and inner-mouth elements leads to an elevator finish and impressive length.
Meursault 1er Cru "Perrières" 2016
91-93/100 Neal Martin
The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières has a fresh, perfumed bouquet with scents of orange blossom and rose petals on the nose. Other vintages have shown more mineral dynamism at this stage, but this is certainly pretty. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and energetic salinity that comes through on the finish, finishing with a salivary aftertaste. Excellent.
Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières" 2015
93/100 Bruce Sanderson
Smooth and creamy, with flavors of peach, lemon cake, honey and spices. Balanced and expressive, with a long, smooth aftertaste that evokes orange and mineral notes. Best from 2019 to 2027.
Pommard 1er Cru 2015
92/100 Bruce Sanderson
A solid, dense version saturated with black cherry, blackberry and earth flavors. Iron and stone elements creep in as this remains square and inflexible for now. Best from 2023 to 2040.
