Vintage 2000 in BORDEAUX

The Bordeaux region is one of the lucky ones in this respect. vintage which in many respects caused difficulties in the vineyards. Finally, we're talking about the Bordeaux region, but some appellations, such as Sauternes, were hit by torrential downpours that decimated an entire year's work. As far as success is concerned, the Left Bank got the better of the Right Bank.

Despite the rather mixed start to the vine cycle, with rainy May and June, the rest of the year was much more qualitative. July and August were dry and scorching, and took the upper hand over the diseases that had made their appearance. Thanks to this heat, the grapes reached a perfect level of ripeness, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon. If we take a closer look at each of the appellations, the Graves wines, as well as the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon, are at the top of the list. Pauillac wines and Saint-Julien stand out. In Graves and Pessac-LéognanThe white wines are fine, fruity and complex. As for the reds, such as Châteaux Pape Clément, they are powerful, dense and long-lasting. Continuing along the Left Bank, the Pauillac wines show their muscles and offer highly concentrated, robust wines such as Château Latour while Saint-Julien as Léoville-Poyferré surprise with their finesse and complexity. The wines of Margaux and Saint-Estèphe are also doing very well, but with slightly less substance than neighboring appellations.

The Right Bank also offers a great vintage, but care will have to be taken when selecting wines. Rainfall was heavy in this part of Bordeaux, and humidity was higher than in other years, resulting in greater disease development. Hence the more selective aspect of the Châteaux. If we're talking about mythical wines, Château Cheval Blanc on Saint-Emilion will be a legendary wine, just like Château Clinet and Petrus in Pomerol.

Vintage 2000 in BOURGOGNE

Visit 2000 vintagethe first of the new millennium to launch a series of winegrower vintages. It has to be said that the year 2000 put a lot of pressure on some estates, with its erratic weather. However, the beginnings were promising, with rather mild weather in May and June. Mild temperatures combined with plenty of sunshine enabled the vines to develop quite early. Flowering then proceeded perfectly, revealing the small flowers on the vine, which, once their cap has fallen, make way for the future grape berries. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of July and August, which were disastrous, with very wet weather and very cold temperatures that had a negative impact on grape ripening. The beginning of September wasn't much better, but a break in the weather in mid-September enabled us to pick ripe grapes and harvest quality grapes in bright sunshine.

With all these vagaries of the weather, the choices made by the winemakers are crucial to helping the vines reach optimum ripeness. White wines fare slightly better than reds with more resistant and less capricious Chardonnays. Two regions stand out Chablis wineswhich offer a fine maturity and lively wines. Then white wines south of Beaune in prestigious appellations such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet or Chassagne Montrachet are more complex and fatter. Pinot Noir, a fragile grape variety that doesn't take kindly to accordion-like weather, had a little more trouble. To be sure of not being disappointed, you need to concentrate on the Côte-de-Nuits. Wines from Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosnes-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny offer complete, powerful wines with great potential.

Vintage 2000 in VALLEE DU RHÔNE

As in Burgundy, the 2000 vintage offered a few nights of stress for the winemakers.

The accordion-like weather gave some of them a hard time, especially in the southern part. Clearly the northern wines fared much better than the southern ones in the 2000 vintage.with one small exception. The wines of the Côte Rôtie are full-bodied, round and fine. On the appellation Saint-JosephThe same can be said of the wines from this region, which are aromatic and rich, but lack a little finesse compared with those from further north. Wines fromHermitage and Crozes-Hermitage are also doing well, even if this is a vintage for winemakers. Some of them harvested too late, with grapes too rich in alcohol.

On the other hand, the very nice surprise is dedicated to the wines of Cornas, which emerge balanced, powerful and highly complex. A great success.

For the whites in the northern part, the Condrieu such as Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage are very well made.

In the Méridionale region, although the wines are generally quite good, those from Châteauneuf du pape stand out from the crowd with powerful, long-keeping wines. We still have a few bottles of the magnificent Château de Beaucastelowned by the Perrin family.

Vintage 2000 in the rest of France

Visit LoireThe Chenins are very well made, with ripe, intense wines. The Chenins are very well made, with ripe, intense wines. The dry whites are better than the sweet whites. As for Sauvignon-based wines, the Sancerres are of classic quality, while the Pouilly-Fumé benefited from a very hot summer, resulting in rich, complex wines.

Visit ChampagneThe vintage was disappointing. The capricious weather alternated between fine weather and thunderstorms, resulting in a major imbalance. Although Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier fared slightly better than Chardonnay, the latter had difficulty reaching full maturity.

Let's move on to the South-West, which, it has to be said, produced some outstanding wines in the 2000 vintage.

The weather, quite similar to Bordeaux, enabled the red wines to express themselves wonderfully. Either with dazzling fruit, or with great finesse in appellations where it is not expected, such as Cahors or Madiran.
