ABOUT CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET
AND PULIGNY-MONTRACHET
Most critics place Puligny-Montrachet on the top step of the podium of Burgundy's great white wines, no doubt thanks to its family tree with branches laden with grands crus. Le Puligny is home to the entire Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. A classic Puligny has two things going for it: the magical precision of its floral bouquet, far more delicate than that of Meursault or Chassagne, and that inflexible straightness that runs through the wine from one end to the other when it is well vinified.
Visit Chassagne-Montrachet is classified as one of the 57 premier cru appellations of the Côte de Beaune vineyards. It covers 440 ha and produces around 5,000 hl of red and 3,000 hl of white. Chassagne - which in 1789 won the right to add Chassagne-Montrachetis a village in the French department of Gold Coastand a small part of Remigny, in Saône-et-Loire. The commune of Chassagne-Montrachet suffers from the notoriety of its famous neighbor, Puligny-Montrachetwith which it shares two grands crus the Montrachet and the Bâtard-Montrachet. This neighbourhood of Puligny is reflected in the characteristics of the white wines: firm but never hard. The only grand cru located entirely on its territory, criots-bâtard-montrachetThe average size of the vineyard is just 1.6 hectares. Best known for its white wines, this commune in the Côte de Beaune produces some excellent red wines, generally offering outstanding value for money. But the superior reputation of the whites is overshadowing them.

BEST GRANDS CRUS OF CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET AND PULIGNY-MONTRACHET
The different names :
Montrachet Grand Cru - Shared between Puligny and Chassagne
It's located on a hillside with both southern and eastern exposure, and bears witness to an exceptional terroir: fine marly limestone interwoven with marl, on a very gentle slope. In its veins undoubtedly flow some colluvium from the Nuits stratum, descended from the chevalier, but this is a royal plasma. There are 4.01 ha on Puligny and 3.99 ha on Chassagne-Montrachet.
Batard-Montrachet - Shared between Puligny and Chassagne
5 ha of vines at Chassagne, for almost 4 ha at Puligny. Located below Montrachet, the soil is deeper and heavier than that of Bienvenues, if not identical. Bâtard-Montrachet is known for being rich, full and sometimes even heavy and solid.
Chevalier-Montrachet - Only in Puligny
Le Chevalier lies just above Montrachet. It is considered the noblest appendage of its prestigious neighbor. Le Chevalier may be next door to Montrachet, but the differences between them are striking. Visually, Le Chevalier is higher up the slope, where the air is cooler. The soil is thinner on the slope, and this is reflected in the wine's shallower depth. Conversely, its stonier terroir gives the wine that intense minerality that defines a great Chevalier.
Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet - Only in Puligny
The vineyard forms a rectangle in the northeast corner of Bâtard-Monrachet, just below the vines on the right. The first mention of this vineyard dates back to 1397. It appears in the archives of the Abbey of Maizières, which purchased "welcome vines" in 1397 and 1418, as Jean-François Bazin points out.
Criots-Batard-Montrachet - Only on Chassagne
This small climat extends the Chassagne side of Bâtard-Montrachet to the south. A very rare wine these days. With more pebbles and less clay in the soil than Bâtard, criots show more elegance, but also a little less substance and ageing capacity.

♢ Domaine Blain-Gagnard
Jean-Marc Blain created following his alliance with Claudinedaughter of Jacques Gagnard. Le domaine Blain Gagnard The grapes are ploughed between the rows, crushed then pressed for the whites, settled, fermented in barrel, stirred on the lees, racked once, then rested in stainless steel vats and bottled for the whites just before the next vintage. The reds benefit from minimal extraction, in order to tame the often uncompromising tannins of the grapes. Chassagne. The secret of Jean-Marc Blain is therefore based less on its originality than on its personality, which shines through in every decision taken in the vineyard or winery, always striving for elegance rather than power. A careful choice of coopers (with a preference for Chagny mine) and forestry accompany a desire not to overtly wood the wines.

This is one of the stars of BurgundyThe story begins with Pierre Ramonet. The story begins with Pierre Ramonet (1906-1994), a local legend both for his wines and his eccentricities. His son André accompanied him for a time, but the next generation, Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, really took over. The reds are consistent and exciting. They develop fruit of the same quality as that found in Côte de NuitsIn theory, it would be possible to obtain this at Chassagne too, but we rarely see it in practice. The whites each have their own personality, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the minty notes on the first nose.
