Treilles 2018 - Domaine Belargus
Anjou Coteau des Treilles - Belargus
97/100 Parker
Cellaring potential : To 2030 - 2080
Tasted by Stephan Reinhardt on July 8, 2021: "Coteau des Treilles de Rochefort, a 2.72 hectare south-facing monopole, was resurrected in the late 1990s by Jo Pithon of Domaine Pithon, once famous for its world-class noble sweet wines from Coteaux du Layon. Abandoned after the war because of its 30-70% slopes, this south-facing hillside rests on a "geological chaos", as Ivan Massonnat puts it. "The subsoil is made up of magmatic rocks, schists, poudingues and ancient limestones. ... This parcel is located in the heart of the Pont-Barré nature reserve, a paradise of biodiversity that has never known chemistry and is home to exceptional flora and fauna, observed as early as the 18th century by Angevin botanists."
- Style : Dry white wine
- Grape variety : Chenin
- History of the terroir : The "Coteau des Treilles", a superb monopole of the estate, came back to life at the end of the 1990s thanks to Jo Pithon, a mythical Loire winemaker. This beautiful vineyard enjoys an exceptional location. It had been abandoned in the post-war period due to its steep slopes (from 30 to 70%). After buying 70 plots from 25 different owners, Jo Pithon replanted the Chenin on these magmatic rocks of the Armorican Massif.
- Location and characteristics: This parcel is located in the heart of the Pont-Barré Nature Reserve, a protected area of biodiversity that has never known chemistry. These sunny rocky escarpments are home to an incomparably rich flora and fauna, described as early as the 18th century by the first botanists from Angers.
- Exposure: The Coteau des Treilles is a very steep, south-facing plot overlooking the Layon. It is located on a real geological chaos (composed of spilites, schists, sandstones and poudingues) which transmits its complexity and its minerality to the wine.
- Tasting: Unique wines with great ageing potential. After three years of maturing, they develop a rare aromatic intensity. Without exuberance, they express a mineral power (rather than solar power) in a model of tension, balance and energy.
- Technical information: Located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon. Cuvée Monopole. Azuré Bleu Céleste. Appellation Anjou Contrôlée. Surface area: 2.72 ha. Slope: 30-70%. Slope : South.
