Premier grand cru classé B - Saint-Émilion

Château La Gaffelière, owned by Léo de Malet Roquefort, is a 38-hectare wine-growing estate (including 22 hectares dedicated to Premier Vin), located between the hills of Ausone and Pavie in the commune of Saint-Émilion, in the Gironde region of France. In the AOC Saint-Emilion, it is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the latest 2012 Saint-Emilion wine classification.

What are the specificities of Château La Gaffelière?

The Château La Gaffelière is doing well thanks to its ancestral reputation. Indeed, having been established for 4 centuries in Saint-Emilion, the estate has never changed hands. Still the current owner, the de Malet Roquefort family is recognised as the oldest family in Saint-Emilion.

The Château produces an average of 100,000 bottles per year.

The vines, with an average age of 35 years, produce a wine that is one of the great classics of the appellation. A blended wine made from two grape varieties:

  • Merlot 80%
  • Cabernet franc 20%

Since 2000, the harvest has been carried out in crates, a practice that respects the grapes. Fermentation is carried out in thermo-regulated intox vats. The wine is aged in new oak barrels for 14 to 20 months. So, since recent vintages, we find a wine that conforms to its counterparts of the appellation and of the Bordeaux vineyard.

The Malet Roquefort family defends its ecological values by respecting the environment through sustainable agriculture. The family uses only organic treatment products and works the vines using traditional methods in order to reduce the estate's ecological imprint as much as possible.

The Château La Gaffelière is a perfectly balanced wine of exemplary finesse. The estate promises a fruity wine with an elegant woodiness. Its colour, although varying according to the vintage, is still very intense and rather dark. Known for its length on the palate, it is a surprising wine perfectly combining power, elegance and finesse.

The Château produces a second wine "Clos La Gaffelière", made mainly from the youngest vines. A young wine from the Saint-Emilion appellation with a keeping potential of 5 to 7 years.
