Haut-Brion is a 1er Grand Cru Classé of Graves in 1855. It is one of the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux, and probably the first to make wine under its own name, with vinification underway about 100 years before its first growing peers. It has only really been owned by four major families, each of which has had its own impact and contributed to the great reputation of the estate. Alone among the five premiers crus outside the Médoc, the Château Haut-Brion is located in the region of Pessac-Léognan a little further south and is surrounded by the suburbs of Pessac. The urban rather than rural location is quite rare for a property of this status (although research shows that this leads to higher temperatures, which favour vine growth) and explains its smaller size, although there are 51 hectares of vines.
How to taste a Château Haut-Brion?
This great wine will need at least ten years to reach its peak, or even more depending on the quality of the vintage. Do not hesitate to open the bottle a few hours in advance before tasting it. An old vintage should not be carrafed. After that, all you have to do is enjoy your tasting. Notice the evolution of the aromas on the nose and in the mouth. Determine the length and splendour of the finish in the mouth.
