Premier grand cru classé - AOC Sauternes

The Château Guiraud, owned by the Peugeot family, is a 128-hectare vineyard, including 100 hectares of vines. It is located in Sauternes, Gironde. It is one of the two premiers crus classés of the commune of Sauternes. This proximity of classification with the king of the appellation - Château d'Yquem - prompted the purchaser of Guiraud in 1981 to apply the methods in use in Yquem. Namely, picking grain by grain, fermentation in barrels and maturing in new oak barrels for a third. A great success. Not that Guiraud reached the heights of Yquem, but it re-established itself in the hierarchy at a level that many others have lost. And this, despite a high proportion of Sauvignon grape variety, less capable than Sémillion of producing great Sauternes.
