Premier grand cru classé - AOC Sauternes
Château Guiraud, owned by the Peugeot family, is a 128-hectare wine estate, including 100 hectares of vines. It is located in Sauternes, in Gironde.
It is one of the two first classified growths of the commune of Sauternes. This proximity of classification with the lord of the appellation - Château d'Yquem - encouraged the person who bought Guiraud in 1981 to apply the methods used at Yquem.
That is to say, harvesting grain by grain, fermentation in barrels and ageing in new oak barrels for a third. A challenge that was met. Not that Guiraud has reached the heights of Yquem, but it has re-established itself in the hierarchy at a level that many others have lost. And this, despite a high proportion of Sauvignon grapes, which are less suited than Semillion to producing great Sauternes.
