So, what are the first opinions on the 2022 vintage? 

A new period of climatic challenges, with severe frosts, summer hail storms and droughts, which have moved from being exceptional events to regular annual events, and which have had an impact on yields and costs for winegrowers.

 

How the 2022 vintage went

We will remember this summer as one marked by impressive and regrettable forest fires that shocked the wine world this summer. With the driest July on record since 1959, forest fires ravaged 20,000 hectares of forest in a fortnight. More consistently hot summers are a result of our changing climate and Bordeaux winemakers are now concerned that smoke taint may become another factor to manage on an annual basis. The risk of smoke taint can occur at any time after vine flowering in the event of fire. Research has shown that thick-skinned, small-grained grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which have a higher surface-to-volume ratio, are at greater risk. For the vast majority of Bordeaux En Primeur 2022 wines, there is no risk of smoke taint.

However, the last two hottest years with forest fires in Bordeaux were 1949 and 1989, both of which are now considered "mythical vintages". We look forward to hearing more and don't miss the 2022 vintage news on our website!
