In the vineyard of Bordeaux, only the best Châteaux de la Rive Gauche have been classified according to their quality in five different categories; premier cru, second cru, troisième cru, quatrième cru, cinquième cru classé. The sweet white Bordeaux wine of Sauternes and Barsac was also classified in the same 1855 classification.
This 1855 classification evolved in 1932, 1955, 1973, 1986 and 1996, making the great Bordeaux wines a world reference. The Bordeaux region is divided into 57 appellations d'origine contrôlée (AOC), the most prestigious of which are : Haut-Médoc, Margaux, Pauillac, Pessac-Léognan, Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien and Sauternes. The vineyards of Bordeaux produce about 80% red wines and 20% dry or sweet white wines.
