Les Allées de Cantemerle 2015
Haut-Médoc - Second wine of Château Cantemerle
90/100 James Suckling
I love the supple, fine tannins of this red wine, with its aromas of chocolate and red fruit on the nose and palate. Delicious fruitiness and a vibrant finish; it's a real treat. Don't hesitate! Second wine of Cantemerle.
Les Allées de Cantemerle is the second wine of the prestigious Château Cantemerle, located in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Created to offer a more accessible and earlier expression of the estate's style, it benefits from the same viticultural and winemaking expertise as the grand vin, while being made from a specific selection of parcels and lots. Its aging is generally shorter to emphasize the fruit and suppleness.
The blend varies slightly from vintage to vintage, but it is based primarily on the traditional Médoc grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, sometimes complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and aging potential, while Merlot contributes roundness and lusciousness. This combination results in a balanced wine, true to the classic Haut-Médoc style.
On the palate, Les Allées de Cantemerle is distinguished by its aromas of fresh black and red fruits, blackcurrant, cherry, and blackberry, accompanied by delicate notes of sweet spices, cedar, and sometimes licorice. The tannins are generally softer than those of the grand vin, allowing for relatively young enjoyment, often between 3 and 10 years after the harvest, depending on the vintage. It pairs particularly well with grilled meats, roasted poultry, and aged cheeses.
