It was Saint Benoît d'Aniane, Charlemagne's adviser, who created the vineyards of the Gassac valley starting from the 780s. There is strong reason to believe that Saint Benoît gave Charlemagne a taste of the valley's first wines. Thus the Grands Crus of Daumas Gassac were born in the shadow of a prestigious abbey like most great famous wines.
