The Château Phelan Ségur is a wine estate located between château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur.
You will find a wide choice of Saint-Estèphe wines at the best price, such as old vintages of Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, Calon-Ségur, Haut-Marbuzet, Lafon-Rochet, Meyney in the commune of Saint-Estèphe.
The official history of the Château Phelan Segur begins with the bringing together of two Bordeaux vineyards, Clos de Garramey and Segur. The properties were grouped together by Bernard Phelan, who, in the tradition of the time, combined the existing Segur name with his own and the Château Phelan Segur was born. In 1860, Bernard Phelan created the largest vineyard in the Saint Estephe appellation.
After passing through the hands of the Delon family, owner of the Château Leoville Las Cases in Saint Julien and Nenin in Pomerol, it's the Gardinier family who became the owners in 1984.
Today, the property on the left bank in Saint Estèphe is managed by Thierry Gardinier. He is also responsible for several other Bordeaux vineyards including Château Meyney in Saint Estèphe and Château Grand Puy Ducasse in Pauillac.
In August 2017, Château Phelan Ségur was sold for more than 90 million euros! The vineyard was sold to the rich Belgian investor Philippe Van de Vyvere.
The vineyard practices reasoned viticulture in a logic of respect for the vines and more generally for the environment.
The vineyard has a terroir of gravel, sand and clay. The vines are mainly spread over three sites. 8 hectares of vines are planted near the château. However, their best terroir, which is also their largest vineyard, is located very close to the Château Montrose.
It offers in tasting a wine composed of:
To produce the wine of Phelan Ségur, vinification is carried out in 48 stainless steel vats of 40 hectoliters, up to 220 hectoliters. Phelan Ségur is aged in approximately 50% new French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.
There is a second wine, Frank Phelan, which made its debut in 1986. Frank Phelan was named after a former owner who built the château.
The estate has recently added a third wine, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, La Croix Bonis.
