The château Léoville Barton, property of Anthony Barton, is a 50 ha wine estate. It is located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, in Gironde. It is classified deuxième grand cru in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. The production is 270 000 bottles. The château Léoville Barton is the smallest part of the large Léoville estate (after Las Cases and Poyferré) and has belonged to the Barton family since 1826. There is no château and the wine is made at Langoa Barton. Léoville Barton's 48 hectares of vines are located to the east of the St-Julien appellation and lie on clayey-gravelly soils. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon 72%, Merlot 20%, Cabernet Franc 8%.
The wine is aged in oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months. Since Anthony Barton took over from his uncle Ronald in the mid-80s, quality has skyrocketed at Léoville Barton and the wine has reached a high level of excellence. It is tannic and austere in its youth, but over time it develops the classic cedar character that is characteristic of St.-Julien, as well as extremely pure blackcurrant and cassis fruit notes. Léoville Barton's wines are designed for long cellaring and tend to peak after 10-15 years of bottle age.
Here are a few exceptional vintages from the Léoville Barton estate:
1945, 2010, 2003, 1948, 2000
