In the northern Rhône, there are seven major appellations: Côte Rôtie, Hermitage, Condrieu, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Saint-Peray. And of course Château Grillet, the only appellation with only one producer! To the south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Lirac and the Côtes du Rhône are the important areas of the Rhône. The northern Rhône is only 60 km long and is responsible for 4-5% of all the wines in the region. The climate is "continental", with hot summers, cold winters and rainfall throughout the year.
What are the differences between the wines of Rhône North and South?
The wines of the southern Rhône and the northern Rhône regions are very different in style and character. The wines of the southern Rhône are warmer, rich in alcohol, succulent, sweet, spicy and filled with herbes de Provence, kirsch and other ripe red fruits.
They can be enjoyed young and most of them don't really need to be kept. The wines of the Rhône can be full-bodied, concentrated, and even jammy, elegant and refined. It depends on the producer, the terroir and the vintage.
What are the particularities of the great wines of the Rhône ?
Probably the most striking feature is the slope of the hills. The vineyards are terraced to prevent soil erosion, retain the sun's heat and make life a little easier for the winemakers!
This is the cradle of Syrah and where many wine lovers find it reaches its height of expression - full-bodied, flavorful and elegant.
The most prestigious appellations of the great wines of the Rhône are particularly: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Condrieu, Cote-rôtie, Hermitage, Saint Joseph.
