History of Chateau de Vaudieu

Château de Vaudieu is one of the oldest estates of Châteauneuf du Pape. This beautiful classical castle was built in 1767. Château de Vaudieu is not only one of the oldest estates in the southern Rhône valley, it was also one of the first to export its wine to other markets. Château de Vaudieu was one of the largest vineyards in the region in the middle and end of the 19th century.

The beginning of the modern era for Château de Vaudieu began in 1955, when the historic property was bought by the Meffre family. At that time, the Château de Vaudieu vineyard had been reduced to 24 hectares. Gabriel Meffre was able to enlarge the property to its current size of 70 hectares. The success of Château de Vaudieu was not Gabriel Meffre's only activity. He also developed a large trading company in Gigondas and eventually acquired a total of 900 hectares of vines! By marriage, Château de Vaudieu remained in the family. Today, the estate is managed by the Brechet family. Daughter of Gabriel Meffre, Sylvette married Michel Brechet. One of the Brechet family's first steps was to call on Philippe Cambie as a consultant.
