Château Cantemerle - Haut-Médoc

The château Cantemerle, is a 92-hectare wine-growing estate located in Macau in Gironde. Located in AOC Haut-Médoc, it is classified Cinquième Grand Cru in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. It was added to this list in 1856.

What are the specificities of Château Cantemerle?

Dating from the 12th century, the Château Cantemerle is one of the oldest estates in the Bordeaux wine region, which takes its name from the lords of Cantemerle. In the 16th century, Ponset de Cantemerle was the first to cultivate the vineyard. A great step forward for the property which was then used to grow wheat.

Until the late 1800s, the fortune of Château Cantemerle couldn't have been better. What happened next devastated the property. Not only was Cantemerle the worst hit of all the Médoc's crus classés during the phylloxera crisis, but the vines were then attacked by mildew between 1879 and 1887. As a result, the annual production of Château Cantemerle was reduced by 50% because many vines had died and the vineyard had to be replanted.

After more than three hundred years of ownership, the Villeneuve family sells the Château to the Dubos family in 1892 and in 1981 the SMABTP group became the owner. At the time of purchase, the Cantemerle estate was completely renovated.

The wine of the Château has long been underestimated and is regaining its natural elegance. Its sandy-gravelly terroir on deep gravel gives birth to a rather full-bodied, light, fresh, elegant and charming wine that can be enjoyed in its youth. The Château remains a sure value of the Grands Crus of the appellation.

The vineyard offers a wine tasting composed of different grape varieties:

After vinification in a combination of 24 conical shaped wooden vats, 10 stainless steel vats and 7 cement vats, the wine is aged in 40% to 50% new French oak barrels for 12 to 16 months, depending on the vintage.

The estate also produces a second wine, Les Allées de Cantemerle.
