The Complete Guide to Leoville Las Cases

Léoville Las Cases is a Second Cru Classé, but undeniably produces wines of quality worthy of a Premier Cru Classé. Here is some essential information to explore this famous wine estate.

  • - The Estate

The Château Léoville-Las Cases is one of the oldest Médoc wine estates. It is located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle in Gironde. The estate extends over 98 hectares of vines. The vineyard is glued to Château Latour, separated by the little Juillac stream. It is the largest of the 3 Léoville properties (with Barton and Poyferré). The 98 hectares of vineyards of Léoville Las Cases are ideally located on clayey-gravelly soils. The largest parcel is surrounded by a stone wall and stretches between the village of St-Julien and Château Latour.

  • - The wine of Leoville Las Cases

The wine is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%). It is aged in oak barrels (70-80% new) for 18 months. Léoville Las Cases produces probably the most exotic wine in the Médoc, which is partly due to the fermentation of the must at below average temperatures. This allows it to retain its youthful aromatic richness. On the palate, it is powerful, concentrated and wonderfully well-balanced.
