What are the specificities of Château Gruaud Larose?

The Château Gruaud-Larose, owned by the Merlaut family, is a wine estate located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, in the Gironde region. It extends over 82 hectares of vines planted on a superb gravelly hilltop and produces approximately 450,000 bottles per year.

The label is unequivocal in proclaiming: "The king of wines, the wine of kings". And there is nothing usurped in this century-old self-proclamation. Gruaud-Larose develops a power that some people reproach it for. It's true that we have to wait the wine for ten years. The takeover by the Taillan group in 1997 completed and refined the winemaking methods that now make Château Gruaud-Larose a wine that has gained in finesse. The talents of Georges Pauli, the steward, have allowed an impeccable work over the last thirty years, barely marrying, with a little correction, the small years. It is an exceptional wine.

The Château Gruaud Larose, Second Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux in 1855 on the Saint-Julien appellation, is a blending wine of 4 different grape varieties:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon 61%
  • Merlot 29%
  • Cabernet Franc 5%
  • Petit Verdot 5%

Château Gruaud Larose has managed to keep its original size and its mythical red wine is produced from vines that are on average 43 years old.

Coming from a long wine-growing tradition always focused on the search for excellence, the Château Gruaud Larose offers for tasting a wine of legendary finesse.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels (90% new) for 18 months. Careful production produces an exceptional wine. The wines of Château Gruaud Larose perfectly combines generosity and concentration. Wines of Saint-Julien with superb ageing potential.

The Château Gruaud Larose also produces a Second Wine since 1979: "Sarget de Gruaud Larose". Its second wine benefits from the same care given to his great wine. It is also aged in barrels. Its quantity varies from one year to another but represents on average 150 000 to 200 000 bottles.
