Saint Cosme is located near the site of an ancient Roman villa that would have been planted with vines thousands of years ago. It is one of the oldest wine producers in the world. They have been involved in wine production since the 15th century! It has been passed down for 15 generations in the Barruol family. Henri Barruol, the patriarch of the family who truly brought Saint Cosme into the modern era starting with the 1957 vintage, died at the age of 89 in January 2017. His son, Louis Barruol, has been running the company since 1992.
The wines of St Cosme
Saint Cosme produces Gigondas wines from 15 hectares of vines. We mainly find its great wines in the AOC Gigondas, but they also exist in other appellations, such as : Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Côtes-du-
Côte Rotie is produced from grapes purchased from producers in the northern Vallée du Rhône. In Gigondas, they produce several wines, including 4 single vineyard wines, true stars of the appellation; Valbelle, Le Claux, Hominis Fides and Le Poste. Valbelle was the first of these wines to make its debut in 1993. The terroir of Valbelle and Hominis Fides consists of sandy and limestone soils.
Le Claux has a terroir of gravel and clay with old vines planted more than 100 years ago. Le Poste is made from 50 year old vines planted in 1963 in a terroir of limestone and marl.
In Châteauneuf du Pape, however, they do not own any vines. On the contrary, like most merchants, they maintain contracts with several producers. Most of their grapes are planted in the lieux-dits of La Crau, Valori Cristia and Courthezon.
The vines are 60 years old and are mainly Grenache. These are wines of great complexity, but also of great depth.
