The Château Troplong Mondot is classified Premier Grand Cru Classé B, which over the last decade has produced wines equivalent to the other 1er Grands Crus Classés. Its château dates back to 1745, it was originally part of a fairly large estate that included the vineyards of the Château Pavie. It became autonomous in 1850 when it was acquired by Raymond Troplong. Later, it was bought by Alexandre Valette and now belongs to his great-granddaughter, Christine and her husband Xavier Pariente.
Troplong Mondot owns 30 hectares of vines well situated along the Mondot hillside in the north-east of the St-Emilion appellation. The soils are rich in calcareous clay and are planted with Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels (75% new) for 18 months. It is bottled unfiltered. Michel Rolland, master oenologist, has been a consultant at Troplong Mondot since the mid-1980s. The soil is clayey-limestone on the Côte de Pavie. Located on the hill of Mondot, the estate faces the village of Saint-Émilion.
The vine is planted on a clayey hilltop, it gathers a multitude of aromas and is constantly soaked in sunlight. The Château Troplong Mondot is known for the power of its wines and their concentration, especially in the best vintages. Purchased by the Thienpoint family (owner of Vieux Château Certan) and somewhat neglected, the property regained a start of health by passing to the hands of Claude Valette. This cru, which it was better to forget between 1970 and 1982, was taken over by Christine Valette in 1980 and has resurfaced completely, notably with the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages. It is the ransom of vinifications that respect the grapes as closely as possible, using sulphiting only within the limits of what is necessary and maturing in barrels according to the structure of the batches. Noteworthy: a very great 1995 vintage. Remarkable in difficult vintages, particularly in 1992. This proves the expertise that the winegrowers and the team of this famous château. Knowing how to adapt, facing the difficulties of nature to give birth to a royal liquid.
