Is 2016 a good vintage for wines?

During the 2016 vintage, the season was turbulent in France and winegrowers in several regions began harvesting, having already suffered from hail, frost and rot. Burgundy suffered from severe frost, especially in Chablis and Beaujolais. Bordeaux managed to get through this vintage almost unscathed with a superb summer. Overall, this vintage had a difficult start with the frost period, but ended on a very sunny summer. Quality levels are very variable. What is the rating of the 2016 wines?

 

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage is one of the most unique and exciting vintages of recent years. The barrel samples we tasted reveal that the wines have elegance, beautiful ripe red fruits, silky tannins, lower alcohol content than previous years and vitality. The energy of these wines is their selling point, many of them displaying a pleasant freshness that will delight connoisseurs. Stylistically, the red wines of 2016 are very attractive with succulent red fruits, ripe tannins, lower alcohol content than previous years and remarkable vitality.

 

A very well saved vintage! Nature is amazing, as are the winegrowers. Prolonged period of rainy weather, combined with vines weakened by frost. Sunday work was essential to preserve the remaining crops. A wonderfully bright summer continued, with hot, dry conditions leading to mild stress because of drought and occasional sunny moments. The resulting wines are generally juicy and fresh, with good acidity and modest alcohol levels, rarely exceeding 13%. The reds have a very classic pinot noir fruit profile and the whites offer citrus fruit and a little austerity, resulting in a more typical fruit profile compared to 2015. The wines are curious in that the front of the mouth offers ripe and juicy fruit, the finish is undoubtedly that of a cool vintage.
