Domaine Trapet - Jean & Jean-Louis TRAPET
Founded in 1919 in Gevrey-Chambertin, the Domaine Trapet Père et Fils excelled during the 20th century. Jean-Louis Trapet, at the head of the estate, is the son of Jean and the cousin of the Rossignol-Trapet family. He is married to an Alsatian woman, Andrée, and this couple of winegrowers is therefore trying to lead the burgundy estate and the Alsatian estate, while remaining firmly rooted in Gevrey. The 15.70 hectare wine estate is planted with Pinot Noir for the majority (13.5 hectares) and Chardonnay for 1.5 hectares. It has famous appellations such as Grands Crus Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin and Gevrey Chambertin. The estate's wines are among the most prestigious in the region, notably its Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Prieur.
Jean-Louis switched to biodynamic viticulture in the 1990s, first advised by François Bouchet, then by Pierre Masson. Jean-Louis uses partial de-stemming, pre-fermentation cold maceration, long vatting periods and gravity to add to his wines. He uses 30 to 75% new barrels, depending on the cuvée. He refuses the use of sulphur, both at harvest time and during vinification or maturing, being satisfied with a small dose at bottling. With their succulence and roundness, his wines stand out from the tight and precise type cultivated by his Rossignol cousins. Domaine Trapet produces an average of 6500 bottles per year.
