Saint-Julien - 2ème Grand Cru Classé
95/100 James Suckling
"This wine displays aromas of blackberry, graphite, tar, wild berries, and cassis, along with notes of grape skin. It offers a medium-to-full-bodied structure, with perfectly integrated, fine-grained tannins that unfold on the palate, combining definition and tension. Supple, flavorful, and sleek, it is distinguished by a long, vibrant finish. Still somewhat reserved, it will reveal its full potential for excellence in three or four years. Ideally enjoyed after 2027."
When to drink this wine : From 2028 and can be kept for decades.
Tasting notes : ‘Aromas of black fruits, ash, tar, blackcurrant and lead pencil follow through to a medium to full-bodied palate, with firm, integrated tannins and a chewy, medium finish. Needs four to six years to soften and blend. Very tight and nicely structured. Try from 2027.’
- Château Léoville Barton is an internationally renowned red wine produced in the Bordeaux region. It is classified as a Second Growth in the Bordeaux wine classification, which means that it is considered to be one of the best wines in the region.
- Grape variety: Château Léoville Barton is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a significant proportion of Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon generally adds structure and complexity to the wine, while Merlot adds sweetness and fruitiness.
Tasting notes:
This wine is renowned for its depth, concentration and elegance. The wine is full-bodied, rich and powerful. It has a fine tannic structure that allows it to age for many years. There are often aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and liquorice. There may also be hints of tobacco, leather and oak, due to the ageing process in oak barrels. The wine has a velvety texture on the palate, with well-integrated tannins that give it a silky mouthfeel. The finish is generally long and complex, with lovely lingering flavours.
Wine and food pairing :
Château Léoville Barton is a powerful wine that goes well with rich, flavoursome dishes:
- It goes particularly well with grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef steak or leg of lamb.
- Aged cheeses, especially hard cheeses, can also be good companions for this wine.
- Duck or game dishes, prepared with rich sauces, can be an excellent option.
Serving temperature :
Château Léoville Barton should be served at an ideal serving temperature of around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (60 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit). We recommend decanting before serving to allow the wine to air out and release all its aromas and flavour.
