La Sirène de Giscours 2023
Margaux Second wine of château Giscours
93/100 James Suckling
La Sirène de Giscours is the second wine of the prestigious Château Giscours, one of the historic benchmarks of the Margaux appellation. Crafted with the same exacting standards as the Grand Vin, this cuvée is conceived from the vineyard onward to offer a more approachable and luscious expression of the Giscours terroir. Its name evokes the elegance and finesse that characterize its style.
Primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and sometimes Petit Verdot depending on the vintage, La Sirène de Giscours captivates with its fruity profile, freshness, and silky tannins. Vinification and aging receive the same meticulous care as the Grand Vin, with rigorous plot selection and aging in French oak barrels.
On the palate, it fully expresses the Margaux identity: a nose marked by red and black fruits, delicate floral notes, a harmonious palate, and a velvety texture. More affordable in its youth than Château Giscours, it nonetheless retains excellent aging potential and is one of the most reliable second wines of the Médoc.
The recent 2020 vintages and beyond confirm the estate's rise in quality. The 2021 stands out for its freshness, aromatic precision, and the elegant contribution of Cabernet Franc. The 2022 is considered one of Giscours' greatest recent vintages, combining richness, depth, and remarkable balance. The 2023 displays a more classic and refined style, with beautiful tension and vibrant fruit, while the 2024, still very young, continues the quality-driven work carried out at the estate. Overall, these recent vintages offer elegant, precise wines that are particularly representative of Giscours' qualitative renewal.
