Wines of the Levet vineyard from the estate
The vineyard today
Today, Bernard Levet owns 3.5 hectares of vines in the Cote Rotie appellation. The vines are well placed in 6 locations which are ideally situated around the appellation on the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. The vines are placed in the following way in the terraced vineyards, on the hillside, mainly steep and rocky:
The history of the LEVET estate
The history of Bernard Levet dates back to 1936, when Nicole Levet's grandfather made his first purchase of vines in the northern Rhône Valley. Progress has been slow but steady.
In the formative years, Bernard Levet sold his wine directly from the barrel to local cafés and private customers. The wine is also sold to négociants. Marius Chambeyron bottled their first wines in 1966.
In 1983, several changes took place at Bernard Levet. Most importantly, this was the year that Bernard Levet began to manage the estate with the help of Nicole Levet, his wife.
Once he took the reins, he began to produce, bottle and sell a large percentage of their harvest by their own means. In 1992, Bernard Levet completed the renovation of their cellars.
Their daughter Agnès Levet is now part of the team managing the property. It is planned that Agnès Levet will eventually take full control of the estate. Agnès Levet is also responsible for the design of their current wine labels.
To produce Bernard Levet wines, it is important to know that this is a traditionally managed estate. Most of the time, on average, no more than 50% of the grapes are destemmed.
Instead, they prefer to immerse the cap with wooden boards. The wines are aged in a combination of demi-muids, Alsatian and French oak barrels, of which an average of 15-30% is renewed each year. The wines are then aged for an average of 30 to 36 months before bottling.
