Tasted by Robert M. Parker Jr. on 1st jan 2003 : "This dark garnet coloured wine has amber highlights around the rim. I have always wanted to taste it side by side with the 1971, and it is fascinating to note that the 1971 came to full maturity at a much younger age and has continued to hang on to life without losing any of its seductive fruit and intensity. The 1970 started out more tannic, more backward, more massive, but it needed a lot of time, and it has now reached full maturity. It is a profound Petrus, and certainly one of the greatest Petrus of the last half-century. The wine has a huge nose of cedar, caramel, vanilla, tobacco, fruitcake, and licorice-infused black cherry jam. It is unctuously textured and very full-bodied, with extraordinary sweetness and glycerin, and a nuanced finish."
Terroir
Clay is the secret of Petrus. Petrus is first and foremost a unique terroir on the Pomerol plateau covering 20 hectares, which is also home to two other famous châteaux, La Conseillante and L'Evangile. Petrus occupies the highest point, the top of a 40 meter high hillock called the Boutonnière argileuse de Pétrus; a cold terroir since it is clayey and surrounded by gravel and sand. These famous black swelling clays are very fine and have the property of storing water to give it back drop by drop to the vine. This clay acts as a kind of sponge that absorbs water but whose excess, like a natural drain, will flow down the plateau.
Service
The ideal serving temperature is around 15°C. It will go very well with a fillet of beef with duck foie gras for example.
