Petrus 1995
Pomerol
96/100 Parker : great vintage
Cellaring: now - 2050
Parker's 1998 tasting : "It is interesting to see how this wine continues to evolve. Unquestionably one of the superstars of the vintage, the 1995 Petrus is taking on a personality similar to the extraordinarily backward and muscular 1975. This is not a Petrus that can be approached in its youth (i.e., the perfect duo of 1989 and 1990). The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple colour, followed by a stunning nose of toast, jammy black fruits and roasted coffee. On the palate, it has tooth-piercing levels of extract, massive body and rich, sweet black fruits backed by powerful, noticeable tannins. A formidably layered wine, this is a huge, tannic, monster-sized Petrus that will require a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Forget all the nonsense that Merlot makes sweet, mellow, ready-to-drink wines, because old, low-yielding Merlot vines produced in the manner of Petrus and other great Pomerols often have as much ageing potential as any great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world. Expect the 1995 Petrus to last more than 50 years."
Service
The ideal serving temperature is around 15°C. It will go very well with a fillet of beef with duck foie gras for example.
