Here is a smooth, elegant, and structured presentation of this technical and descriptive profile: Riesling Grand Cru Rangen de Thann "Clos Saint Urbain" 2024 – Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. Technical Specifications: Grape Variety: 100% Riesling. Terroir: Grand Cru Rangen de Thann – Clos Saint Urbain (volcanic soils of tuff and greywacke, rich in clays formed by rock weathering). Viticulture & Vine Age: Vines averaging 62 years old, situated on precipitous, south-facing slopes in Thann. Yield: 17 hl/ha (exceptionally low yield). Sweetness Index: Index 1 (Dry wine / 2.3 g/L residual sugar). Analytical Data: Alcohol: 13.2% vol. | Total Acidity: 4.3 g/L ($H_2SO_4$, equivalent to 6.5 g/L tartaric acid) | pH: 3.15. Production: Bottled in January 2026. Format & Peak Maturity: 75 cl bottle — Best enjoyed between 2028 and 2050, and beyond. The Terroir: Volcanic Singularity. Located at the southern tip of the Alsace wine region in the commune of Thann, the Grand Cru Rangen defies appearances: despite its precipitous, south-facing slopes, its higher altitude makes it a late-ripening terroir (generally the second-to-last to be harvested at the estate, just before the Windsbuhl). Over time, its volcanic rocks—composed of sedimentary ash—weather into pure clays with an extraordinary capacity to bind minerals, lending the wines their vibrant and inimitable signature. (January 2026) Appearance: A brilliant, pale yellow hue. Nose: Imposing and possessing extreme, volcanic power, it commands the taster's attention, transporting them to a mineral realm of rare intensity. Palate: It unleashes a stunning energy that commands respect. Everything comes together here: power, length, intensity, harmony, and a vibrant, saline acidity. Beyond mere words, this wine evokes genuine emotion. Born of rugged terroir and tireless labor, it stands as the crowning achievement of heroic viticulture.
sweetness index 1 (dry)
Soils composed of sedimentary volcanic rocks (tuffs & grauwacke). Description: the dramatic slopes of the Rangen demand truly heroic viticulture, and the volcanic-sedimentary bedrock gives the wine a distinctive mineral profile. These hard rocks break into angular stones and then fine particles that migrate deep into geological fractures, lending flinty aromas and a salty, incisive palate. Despite its full southern exposure, this is a late-ripening site due to altitude and a cool valley influence, producing grapes of great concentration. The 2023 harvest occurred late, and fermentation took nearly a year before reaching dryness. Sixteen months of ageing on total lees in old oak casks refined the wine’s structure. The result is a dense, vertical, saline Riesling with smoky mineral notes, impressive length, and outstanding ageing potential.
