The little story : Guy de Maupassant loves good wine. He likes to make the characters of his novels and short stories drink it, choosing the finest bottles for them. Thus Duroy in Bel-Ami: "He had found the Corton to his taste and he let it fill his glass every time. A delicious cheerfulness entered him, a warm cheerfulness that ran through all his limbs, penetrated him entirely. He felt himself invaded by a complete well-being, a well-being of life and thought, of body and soul".
Vines
Situation : While in Côte de Nuits the landscape observes a rather rigorous and straight line, Cistercian in a word, everything suddenly changes. Hyphen with the Côte de Beaune of a more animated and less austere, Clunisian in a word, the mountain of Corton thrones in majesty and draws a wide arc of a circle. The Clos du Roi (King's Clos) is the main attraction at an altitude of around 300 metres. Just below the Corton on the hillside; on one side Languettes and Perrières, on the other Renardes: one could not dream better.
The terroir : Under the Burgundian beret of the Bois de Corton which caps the mountain, a geological section often cited as an example as it explains everything. On a steep slope, the top of the hillside provides, thanks to fairly marly and clayey soils, the great golden whites, virulent and full of sap. At mid-slope as here, the limestone, stony soil, reddened by the ferruginous oolite of the marls with a high potassium content, makes the red wine powerful, full-bodied, sublime. We are in an exceptionally high position in the Côte for red Grands Crus. A little further down, the wine is more tender and fruity on flinty limestone residues and brown or reddish, clay-limestone soil.
