Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal 2007
96/100 James Suckling
Cellaring: Drink now or cellar (until 2030).
Tasted on 25 Oct 2016: 'The chalk soils drive the pinot noir to make a style that has extra minerality here and compression. On the nose there's white cherry, sweet spice and hints of almost peppery notes. There is also some spring honey and some yeast and mushroom aromas. The palate is silky, very composed, refined, elegant and powerful. It is the Chardonnay that defines the palate here in a way that is different from other Roederer champagnes. This is a unique champagne: the depth and emphasis on grapefruit is impressive, as is the layered, elegant and long finish. The depth and emphasis on grapefruit is impressive, as is the layered, elegant and effortlessly long finish, while a toasty wave of roasted hazelnuts finishes the whole. This is a very approachable wine, but it will be at its best by 2022+.
