Château Chasse Spleen 1993 in Magnum
Moulis - Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
TASTING
To drink now.
You will find notes of blackberries, chocolate, nuts and dried tobacco. A finish that is both greedy and delicate.
TERROIR AND GRAPE VARIETIES
The large 100 hectare vineyard on the left bank of Chateau Chasse Spleen is planted with 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. This shows a major change from what was planted with an increase in Merlot and a decrease in Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc seems to come and go here, as it was removed and later replanted.
The vines are on average 30 years old. The terroir is gravelly, with clay and limestone soil. However, this varies as they have parcels in several different vineyards spread throughout the various communes of the appellation. The vineyard is planted at a density of 8000 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
VINIFICATION
The red wine of Chasse Spleen is vinified in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the vats. Chasse Spleen is aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 12-15 months before bottling.
