Domaine Charvin - Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge 1999
Charvin Estate
Domaine Charvin's Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a discreet yet highly sought-after benchmark of the appellation. Made primarily from old Grenache vines, often complemented by a small amount of Syrah and Mourvèdre, this wine is distinguished by its traditional, minimal-intervention winemaking. Laurent Charvin favors aging in concrete tanks rather than oak, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. The result is an elegant style, far removed from overly powerful or oaky Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.
On the palate, the wine offers an intense bouquet of ripe red fruit, sweet spices, garrigue, and sometimes slightly smoky notes. It is both generous and balanced, with lovely freshness and fine tannins that make it very drinkable even in its youth, while also allowing for aging of 10 to 15 years, or even longer in exceptional vintages. This is an authentic and precise Châteauneuf-du-Pape, highly prized by enthusiasts for its approachability and its ability to faithfully reflect its appellation.
