Roc de Cambes 2019
Cote de Bourg
92+/100 Parker
When to drink this wine : 2027 - 2047
Tasted by William Kelley in 2022: "The 2019 Roc de Cambes showed brilliantly, offering aromas of cassis, sweet berries, cigar wrapper, first floor and rich spice, followed by a powerful, elegantly muscular palate that is deep and concentrated, its fleshy core of fruit framed by ripe acids and ripe, powdery tannins. This is a terrific effort that may well be on the heels of the 2016. Despite its modest appellation, don't hesitate to cellar it, as the Roc de Cambes is invariably better integrated and more interesting with a decade under its belt than when it was released."
Presentation of the vineyard: 12.5 hectares of the vineyard is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir is mainly composed of limestone and clay soils, similar to those found on the right bank of Bordeaux, particularly in Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is south-southwest facing on the top of a plateau, with a view of the river. The vines are old. In fact, many of the vines used for Roc de Cambes are nearly 50 years old, which is impressive. They have vines that are over 50 years old, which adds to the concentration, character and complexity of the wines.
Roc de Cambes is vinified in traditional concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine is then matured in an average of 50% new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling. The vines are much further up the slopes and closer to the Gironde River, which creates a cooler, more clayey terroir.
